This handbook led to our most successful auction ever!

My non-profit has been holding a silent auction at our annual fundraiser for years, and we thought we knew what we were doing, but noticed that we weren't increasing our earnings by much year over year, despite being given higher-value items to auction. We had this book sitting around in our files, but no one felt like they had the time to read it. Well, I finally decided that it was time to break it out, and I am glad that I did! It was an easy read, and I found myself emailing excerpts to my colleagues as I read, sparking great conversations about how we were handling things. We had long debated changing the format of the auction, revamping our bid sheets, etc.. and the handbook gave us straight-forward guidance on how to make those changes without over-complicating things and confusing our potential donors. We were able to make some small modifications and this year had the smoothest and highest-earning auction to date. Next year we will be incorporating even more of the suggestions from the handbook, and look forward to even more success than this year. Thanks Joe for another great guide!

Useful Examples In A Dry Presentation

In general, I found this book a worthwhile expenditure of time. I am not an M&A professional, but I work for a company which has made several acquisitions and some of the issues in this book are common to many M&A deals.

It's obvious that the book was written by a college professor, and the footnotes should be read as well as the chapters to get the full picture. At the same time, the case studies seem to be well chosen to exemplify the classes of problem he addresses.

The book starts with a comparison of M&A problems to other fiascos and disasters. This is useful up to a point - I did not find it overdone, although it's not a typical start to a business book. The author then outlines six areas which cause M&A disasters. Some, like financing complexity, are obvious. Others, like "Tight coupling" of business operations, are less so, but worth the time to consider.

The rest of the book comprises chapters dealing with various problem mergers. These are usually presented in contrast to a successful merger or acquisition later in the chapter, illustrating how some of the pitfalls in the fiasco were avoided in another, similar M&A deal.

I would have liked to see more about how to evaluate synergy in M&A deals - but that's probably another book.

If you or your company have anything to do with M&A, this will probably be a worthwhile read. The presentation is dry, but the cases are a good selection, and the author's points merit consideration. It will certainly give me some food for thought when my company makes another acquisition!

Important Lessons for Everyone

Professor Bruner's new book is brimming with important ideas for managers, policymakers, and academics alike. Ten failed mergers are discussed in depth ranging from Penn Central in 1968 to Tyco in 2002. Each case study includes both quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the component companies and the results of their mergers. The author's facility with case studies has been honed over thousands of cases, and his experience shows in his well-rounded discussions.

This book seems targeted at a professional audience-- it digs deep enough to inform even the most knowledgeable managers and academics-- but it is also readable by a general audience. The ten case studies present compelling narratives of major failures that changed the way everyone does business. Even those without any particular interest in management will find the history interesting. A close reading of this book will especially benefit policymakers who are concerned by the social costs of business failure.

In a field where the stakes are tremendously high, it's important to learn why the major failures have occurred. "Deals from Hell" is the perfect teacher.

This is a very great book. After a few chapters about the major common mistakes in M&A where he provides a framework for M&A failures, he studies a few cases i ndetail, why these M&A did not work. And he always gives a counterpoint, an example of a M&A, in the same conditions, where they worked. Very interesting!

Cartier-Bresson's photos of everyday scenes were apparently bothersome to an audience accustomed to the abstract work of Steiglitz and Strand. But his snapshots were a new and powerful way of documenting the world: an astrologer in 1947 Bombay; a 1967 control room at Cape Kennedy, Fla.; a 1954 "sports gala" in Moscow. He "improvised, incorporating the effects of chance and accident as he went along," writes Philippe Arba‹zar of the BibliothŠque Nationale de France in an essay called "The Public Eye: Shows and Exhibitions." Best and Complete Henri works and life images

First of all, I am surprised with the size and quality of the book. It is not hardcover, but the cover jacket is very well made. All pages are black and white, good quality art paper. The book consists of most Henri Cartier-Bresson works from 1930's to 70s. Amazingly it also consists of his work (painting and drawing) after he retired as photographer. It also has some interesting critiques and commentaries from his friends and scholars.

For people who does not know Henri, he is regarded as the father of street photography and photojournalism. He is one of the founder of highly respected Magnum photo agency. During his life, he works for magazine such as LIFE, Harpers Bazzaar, Vu, Regards, etc. In 1950, he wrote about his photography philosophy of Decisive Moment which means not only means capturing the significant moment, but also must be presented in the most artistic composition.

This is by far the most complete book about Henri Cartier-Bresson that I ever read, and I highly recommended for everybody who is interested on pursuing photojournalism or admirer of his body of work and life. Please check out more review at my blog radiantlite dot com.

A Great Tribute

This is a wonderful book. I can think of no better volume about the life work of a photographer that this one of Henri Cartier-Bresson. The book has 602 illustrations consisting of M. Bresson's photographs, his paintings and drawings and family photographs. The family photographs are among the most interesting since we have collected, in one volume, probably all of the photographs taken of the photographer (including an interesting seated portrait of M. Bresson as a prisoner of war). There are some excellent essays by the editors about the photographer and the formulation of the "decisive moment" and his work but the photographs are allowed to speak for themselves.

The photographs are placed in the order M. Bresson published them. Each section of photographs is preceded by a quote that has a bearing on the pictures and a small picture of the cover of the original book is included with the photographs. Each picture is simply captioned with the place or circumstance and the year it was taken. Many of the images are famous and there are also many discoveries that will enthrall the view. The photographs are reproduces in different sizes and some are smaller than I would like but the overwhelming majority are nicely laid out and grouped. There are excellent appendices that give publication information on M. Bresson's photographs and a timeline of his life.

In short, this is a marvelous book that anyone interested in photography must have. The comment by another reviewer concerning the size of the volume was no problem for me: my bookshelves can accommodate any size of book. But even if I had no space on my shelves, I would make room for this volume.

A superb comprehensive collection of HCB's photography

This title is in my opinion by far the best, most comprehensive single book on the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson ever published, or ever likely to be published. The selection of photographs is huge and they are printed superbly on very heavy fine art paper. The accompanying essays provide a very useful insight into Henri Cartier-Bresson's approach to photography, in particular into his concept of the "decisive moment". The sections on his life provide further substance to the book and raise it well above the level of a coffee table publication. My only (very slight) reservation is that because of the huge number of photographs included, not all could be printed at full-page size and several of my favourites are reproduced a little small. However, the title in its present form is already the heaviest in my collection by a considerable margin and to make it any thicker would have made it too difficult to manage. This title is great value for a fine art book of such quality - if you have any interest in HCB at all, get it!

We are fortunate that Professors H. Pichlmaier and F.W. Schildberg and other colleagues have provided us with this important modern successor of a classic textbook. The reader is rewarded by an extensive treatise which includes not only the most up to date techniques in pulmonary, esophageal, mediastinal, and chest wall (including breast) surgery but also provides an excellent perspective on the techniques used by pioneers in the field. Although some of these early techniques are not commonly used today, knowledge of their use and application broadens the capability of the thoracic surgeon. Changing times bring renewed problems with infectious diseases. Knowledge of the management of the pleural space and pulmonary infectious problems is a critical part of the education of the thoracic surgeon.
