This booklet is Part I (Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe) and Part II (What Christians Believe) of Lewis' "Mere Christianity and no longer in print. It is a very appropriate introduction for individuals considering 1 Belief in God and 2. What Christians believe as they consider the Christian faith for themselves.

An Excellent Apologetic for Christianity

The Case for Christianity functions much as a microcosm of the theology of C.S. Lewis. This small book is an excellent introduction to the thought of C.S. Lewis which is heavily centered on the claims of morality in the face of materialistic philosophy. Primarily, the first half is a defense against this type of thought, ending on an invocation to understand that Christianity fills the void primarily because of its answer to the problem of the Fall.

The second half of the text is a very brief outline of Christian dogma. While it does not hit many points (and does not promise to do such), it does hit the major points of Christianity. His contrast Christianity to Dualism and refutation of Dualism are succinct and very good. Additionally, he stresses the all-important fact that Christianity is about Christ's person (and work -- i.e. life/death/resurrection) as well as his teaching, and that it is precisely in His person/work that Christianity is differed from other religions/philosophies. My only qualm is with his view of the importance of various understandings of the Cross. He purports that is only faith in the fact that the Cross was effective that is important and that it is not important to be concerned with the images/understandings thereof. As a Catholic, I truly think that one can (to a degree) understand the soteriological aspects of the Crucifixion and that they do express truths. However, Lewis foresees this Catholic view and even explains how the Catholic view is not different from his by great degrees, for we still acknowledge that the Crucifixion itself is still greater than all explanations thereof.

This is an excellent apology for Christianity that I suggest to all who wish to see a brief glimpse of the mind of C.S. Lewis.

Intro to Mere Christianity.

C.S. Lewis is one of my favorite authors, he is witty and clear, and when he explains a point, if you don't understand it, you probably never willl.

In the case for Christianity, Lewis draws out the argument for Christianity, begining with the Law of nature, and step by step drawing the reader to the existence of God, the necessity of Salvation, and Christ's salvific work in the world. The book itself is out of print, but if you want to read it, don't despair. It's the first part of Lewis' larger work, Mere Christianity.

About the Author

Eric Scerri was educated at the Universities of London, Cambridge and Southampton. He then obtained a PhD in the History & Philosophy of Chemistry from King’s College, London. After postdoctoral fellowships at the London School of Economics and Caltech Scerri joined the UCLA faculty in 2000, where he teaches chemistry, history & philosophy of science.

He is the author of three award-winning books with Oxford University Press, namely The Periodic Table, Its Story and Its Significance, A Very Short Introduction to the Periodic Table and most recently A Tale of Seven Elements. In addition Scerri has published two books of his own collected research papers on the history & philosophy of chemistry and as well as co-editing three further books on the philosophy of chemistry. His books have been translated into fifteen languages, and he is currently working on two new books. He is also is the founder and editor-in- chief of the journal Foundations of Chemistry.

Scerri’s research includes topics such as the extent to which chemistry is reduced to quantum mechanics and the historical and philosophical significance of the periodic system. He has appeared on radio and television and at lectures in countries all round the world and has published numerous articles in professional journals as well as more popular magazines including Scientific American, American Scientist, New Scientist etc.

Lee McIntyre is a Research Fellow at the Center for Philosophy and History of Science at Boston University and an Instructor in Ethics at Harvard Extension School. He holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He has taught philosophy at Colgate University, Boston University, Tufts Experimental College, Simmons College, and Harvard Extension School. He is Coordinating Editor of the journal Foundations of Chemistry. Formerly Executive Director of the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University, McIntyre has also served as a policy advisor to the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard and as an Associate Editor in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. He is the author of Laws and Explanation in the Social Sciences (Westview Press, 1996) and Dark Ages: The Case for a Science of Human Behavior (MIT Press, 2006), which won the Silver Award for Philosophy in ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Awards for 2006. He is the co-editor (with Michael Martin) of Readings in the Philosophy of Social Science (MIT Press, 1994) and Philosophy of Chemistry (Springer, 2006) (with Eric Scerri and Davis Baird). He has also written numerous philosophical essays that have appeared in Synthese, Philosophy of the Social Sciences, Teaching Philosophy, Perspectives on Science, Biology and Philosophy, Critica, and Theory and Decision, as well as articles that have appeared in The Humanist, The Times Higher Education Supplement and The Chronicle of Higher Education.

About the Author
John McHugo is an international lawyer and Arabist, with over forty years' experience of the region. This book made me cry

Syria is my father's native country. He never spoke about it since he left Syria in the 1940s and until his premature death in 1984. I never went there and everything I learned from Syria's history is from this remarkable little book by John McHugo. This book made me cry. It is sad to learn how this country is apparently inexorably descending the road to self-destruction. While my tears are trickling on my face, Syria is being teared up apart! I am just beginning to want to know more about my father's country precisly at a time when Syria risks to cease to exist.

Must Read on Syria

Having read countless books on Syria, I can say without reservation that this is the best for both individuals with little background on the country and a long-time observer. John writes with the flair of a journalist, making this book an easy read. He superbly manages to explain the varying dynamics behind all the key historical events in the country's modern history. John also breaks new ground, arguing in the last chapter that Assad regime employs many of the tactics that the French once did to put down resistance in Syria and manipulate its population. While he acknowledges that one must be careful in drawing this parallel, it is quite persuasively presented. There is plenty of scholarship on Hafez and Bashar Al-Assad, their personality cults, and the Ba’ath party. One would do well to read this book in tandem with other works, such as Patrick Seale's Asad. This book positively contributes to the English literature on Syria. If I had one fault it would only be that John sometimes breezes through some key points. However, had he done the opposite, this would not be a book for a new entrant on Syria.

A clear and detailed account of recent Syrian history by a knowledgeable author.

In Syria, John McHugo describes the history of this troubled land over the last 100 years. McHugo is an international lawyer and expert on Arab affairs. After an initial chapter to introduce the reader to the country, McHugo covers French rule, the early independence years to the coming to power of Hafez al Assad, the current rule of his son Bashar and a final chapter summing up the main points of the book. He points out that the French were more concerned with using Syria for their own gain than helping the area and used military force to impose their rule. Hafez al Assad staged a coup to gain power in 1970, which he held for some 30 years. The author covers the short-term merger with Nasser’s Egypt and various wars with Israel. Hafez al Assad was an Alawite and used the Ba’th party to rule. Sectarianism predominates in Syria and the various religious factions are in constant opposition to each other. Bashar came to power at the age of 34 when his father died of leukemia. He was Hafez’s second son, his first son, Basil, having died in a car accident. The current crisis started in March 2011 when a group of children in Der were arrested after writing anti-government graffiti. Protests erupted and Assad blamed foreigners and promised reforms, but the country descended into chaos. Opposition groups formed the Syrian National Council to consolidate their efforts, but this group has split and various Islamist groups, including ISIS, have also gotten into the mix. Russia has supported Assad and as of the writing of the book he seems firmly in control.

McHugo concludes by saying that French and British ambitions created a climate of mistrust of the West. Israel’s taking over of Palestine and wars against other countries have contributed to the unrest in the region. Patronage and state repression are also major factors in the situation. Finally, Syria is the theatre for the proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia. He does mention the terrible human tragedy that has resulted, but the primary focus is on the political situation. In the end he is not hopeful for any peaceful or positive solution.

This book is well worth reading for anyone who wants an understanding of what is happening in Syria and the region.

About the Author
Mike Bartlett exploded onto the scene in 2007 with the premiere of My Child at the Royal Court. Since then he has gone on to become one of his generation’s most inventive and successful dramatists with plays such as Artefacts (2008), Cock (2009), Earthquakes in London (2010) and 13 (2011). 2012 saw the London premieres of Love, Love, Love, Medea and Chariots of Fire, which transferred from the Hampstead Theatre to the West End. His play Bull opened at the Sheffield Crucible in 2013 and transferred to New York as part of last years Brits off Broadway season. Another new play, An Intervention, also opens in April 2014. Mike joined NHB’s list of leading playwrights from Methuen last year. He lives in East London.

Can't wait to see this on stage!

A rapid read of the staging of this British play. Like a polite "Game of Thrones", Charles is, well, Charles - opinionated, stubborn, easily mislead, nothing like his mother. And apparently didn't learn anything in the years he was waiting for the crown. William, Kate, Harry, the ghost of Diana, the PM and the Opposition have other agendas. It's difficult to write a review without giving anything away, but it's worth the read...

Play abdicates its responsibility - to be interesting.

Extremely disappointing. The play started off with a premise that was interesting - a majority government passes an act basically doing away with freedom of the press. In Canada the Charter of Rights and Freedoms would require the courts to declare the legislation void; pursuant to the Bill of Rights, the same thing would happen in the U.S. However, in the U.K. of Charles III the only institution standing in the way of this egregious attack on a basic freedom is the King, who refuses to sign this iniquitous legislation.
It seems to me that this would lead to the King being the hero of the play - and being supported by the media and the subjects whose rights he is protecting. But no, the playwright paints him as the villain of the play and has him forced to abdicate in favour of his treacherous son.
Accordingly the play misses - abdicates? - its responsibility to deal in an intelligent fashion with the very issue that it - apparently inadvertently - seems to raise.
In addition the playwright puts these characters in a situation where one would expect them to be deeply conflicted, but then makes them colourless, one dimensional, and boring. This may work for Ben Jonson, whose characters represent their "humours", but of course Jonson wrote comedies and this is an effective technique in comedy.

Love this Storyline and Characters

I have really enjoyed these Dark Mirror stories. It's not the typical supernatural story line of werewolves or vampires but it runs the gamut of Demons from Hell (which really aren't as bad as one might think), Faes, Weres, Vampires and even more supernatural beings that I've never even heard of. That might sound like it's too much packed into one story but it's not - the author does a great job of blending all these characters in a good harmony. And at the center of the story is the main character Cate Delacy who has wonderful wit, strength, powers of her own, and a personal favorite of mine - Southern charm. I'll definitely be watching for the 3rd book which I hope comes very, very soon!

Marie Castle did it Again!!!!

I have loved so much the first book of this new and intriguing paranormal series that I was a little bit worried about it's sequel, because lets be honest here, in those kind of circumstances everyone tend to think that the next book is doomed to fell short after the first big Boom...well I now can take a sigh of relief because the story keep being as amazing as it's started.

It's always a good sign when I become so engrossed in a story that do anything else than keep reading it make me unbearable (well good for the book not so much for the people around me), and this is the 2nd book of Marie Castle that push me to read the story in one sitting and postpone everything else during my second journey in DM Universe.

There are so many things that I have loved about this read that I am quite appalled that no one else have yet wrote a review about this book...but well here I am so let's start with the plot:

The story start exactly where the 1st one ended, we have a very interesting prologue that keep give us precious information about Evie and the how Cate come to be, after that the story told by her protagonist start again.
The Devil You Know offer a lot of explanation for things that where leaving hanging in the first book but the author is a sneaky woman so a lot of things come up/out in this book that keep me as a reader wondering what come next.
In this book new really interesting characters are introduced and also if the scheme of things have Mrs Castle signature all over it, the author is good enough to not fall in the trap of repetitiveness. Every character is easily recognizable and is well developed also when they don't have (yet?) a big or important role in the storyline. No one nor two dimensional characterization here, just like I like it...and this is true also for the bad guys and this make the story so much more appealing for me.

The romantic interaction between Jacq and Cate is hotter than ever, and any reader can start to connect the dots about what come next and where the story is going if s/he feels like doing so, surely the author give us enough informations to formulate hypothesis.

I really don't want to talk to much about the plot because I don't want to spoiler the read but there are 3 facts that have make me really happy:

1- also if the author take the time and space in the book to introduce other characters point of views the 90% of the story is all about Cate. For me that was a win-win situation I was able to enjoy the introduction of the new characters or drink in new information of previous ones without feel any need to skip some pages over the always unpleasant sensation that that parts about other people were an unwelcome fill in. The storyline about Cate don't become too diluted and thin to make me lose the focus and mixing it with other little storylines is done so well that all is well balanced.

2- The storyline make sense, okay maybe I am too easily overwhelmed by this fact but after have read a lot of series where there is a disjointed feeling about where the story is going I am always unbelievable happy when I found a sequel that feel like a sequel, and a story that progress in a sensible way.

3- also if I have a love-hate relationships with sneak peaks (that because I always want more), I love that in her books the author left us a previews of the next chapter of the story...I find it also comforting because seeing it make me know that she is already writing the new book and make me hope that the wait for the next adventure does not exceed the 1 year of waiting.

Other really cool facts for me are the little introductions that every chapter have, they are so funny and the right ones give us additional informations, and the extras about Characters and Glossary, now that the number of players have increased so much I like this simple way to remind who is who and a glossary is always good when you explore a new world with it's different rules.

Another winner in the Darkmirror Series

The Devil You Know is book two in the Dark Mirror Agency series. Castle brings back Cate Delacy, her grandmother and aunt, and some of the other characters from book one. Cate has a new assignment, which is to find the body of Gemini Roskov's father. She also has a meeting with her paternal grandmother, who is Queen of Denoir, and looking for a female heir to the throne. She thinks Cate is a good candidate. Complicating things further, is sexy, immortal, detective Jacqueline Slone. Jacq and Cate would just like some private time where they can explore the feelings they are developing for each other.
Marie Castle does a fine job of developing her characters, as well as adding humor and warmth to her tale of the dead and undead. The settings she creates are easy to visualize, which makes it easy to track the action. There are also some complete surprises, making this a very enjoyable read.

In time of war, we all show our potential ...

In time of war, we all show our potential at inventing new technology in order to win over our opponents and tanks are a prime example of that. The tanks that were used were vital in winning World War 2. This book doesn't go through all of the wars that used tanks, but it does talk about a few of the most vital battles that were won using the advantage of tanks. It's very informative and very short, so it doesn't take long to get all of the info you need.
