Structured with the novice improviser in mind, it initially focuses on learning how to systematically develop a vocabulary to improvise over chord changes from a guitar-oriented technical perspective. Four varieties of 12 bar blues are covered in order of difficulty:

1. Traditional Blues (I-IV-V),
2. Jazz Blues (with II-V cadences),
3. Minor Blues
4. Bird Blues (Charlie Parker style).

Each new progression is taught throughout a series of etudes, and gradually introduces one or more of the chord/scales required to improvise over most jazz standards.Various melodic concepts and syncopated rhythms commonly used in the swing/bebop idioms, are taught as well.

Volume 2 builds on the principles explored in Volume 1 and explores various applications over “Rhythm Changes,” as well as major, minor and extended tonalities. The technical focus is on multi-positional playing using the entire fretboard.

The ability to improvise a bebop line as it weaves from chord change to key change may seem like an impenetrable code understood by a few gifted jazz masters as they jam, eyes closed, swaying hypnotically to the rhythm.

Richie Zellon has decoded this mystery into an approachable system that dissects the improvised line into easily digestible musical concepts that are built upon the basics of music theory and lead the student from scales to improvisation step by step.

The trio of a logically planned lesson book, a primer of scales and arpeggio fingerings, and a workbook decodes bebop jazz in an understandable sequence. The books are cross referenced to each other and to a web-based series of videos which illustrate each principle with examples and documentation.

Richie’s methodical system is an approach which appeals to me because each lesson builds upon the previous concept moving me incrementally towards spontaneous bebop improvisation. By following his process, jazz improvisation is not a prospect but an inevitability.

This work is a must read for anyone interested in the future of the west.

I first encountered John Gray and his philosophical views in the special features portion of the movie Children of Men based on the book Children of Men by P.D. James and directed by Alfonso Cuaron. John Gray was making a startling claim about the future of the west and philosophy that held my mind captive until I decided to research his work and thought. I decided to first read Enlightenments Wake because I had grappled with other works on the Enlightenment and what it meant for the modern world. I discovered that there are some provocative and controversial claims made in the work that is edifying, however I did feel that Gray made a pedantic show of his clearly elite education. The reading was at time very difficult due to a writing style that was too loaded down with esoteric philosophical examples and an overloaded sentence stucture that made his points difficult to put together. All in all it is worth reading but is not for the faint of heart or the easily bored reader.

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend, teacher and coach during a time when I was off studying about my own spirituality.

I was worried at first that this book would be too much overload on an otherwise throbbing mind and psyche, but it wasn't. It was thoughtful, insightful and invited me into the life Elliott leads. Sure, it's about him -- there's nothing that proclaims otherwise!

And that's what I wanted to know -- how does this life come about? This healing work? And how do you fit it into your own everyday perception of yourself? And the perception others have of you? More importantly -- does that perception matter?

This book truly helped me on this journey of mine and I'm glad it's in my library!

About the Author
Franz Neumann was a political activist and labor lawyer in Germany who became a political scientist in exile. He studied in Germany and the United Kingdom, and spent the last phase of his career in the United States. Peter Hayes is the Theodore Z. Weiss Professor of Holocaust Studies at Northwestern University and the author or editor of seven books, including From Cooperation to Complicity and a prize-winning study of the IG Farben corporation.

A classic study of totalitarian political organization

This is one of the oldest books on National Socialism. It is also one of the best. It is unique because it covers the organization and structure of the state, a field that is far less widely covered than the narrative history of the regime. The book contains detailed studies of different aspects of the Nazi state. A Contemporaries View of Nazi Germany.

Franz Neumann was a prominent German political scientist and activist. This book is an analysis of Nazi Germany, by someone who studied the politics of the Weimer Republic and the rise of the Nazis first hand.

He exposes several myths about the Nazis, such as the Nazi Government being above classes, that Nazi anti-Semitism had always had strong support among most Germans and that the Nazi regime was monolithic.

While, during their rise to power, the Nazi's claimed to support the rights of workers, small farmers, and small business owners, but under the Nazi government, unions were crushed, and the Labor Fronts that replaced them were dominated by employers. The government created a maximum as well as minimum wage, encouraged increased wage differentials between male and female workers and skilled and unskilled workers, and economic inequality increased under the Nazi Government. The Nazi government encouraged the growth of Cartels' which resulted in the elimination of many small businesses.

Although, Neumann admits that anti-Semitism has deep roots in German History, it only affected certain segments of the population such as parts of the Middle upper classes. Most of the working class rejected it. During the Bismark/Wilhemite erea, the largest party was the Social Democratic Party, which rejected anti-Semitism. One of its leaders, August Bebel, called Anti-Semitism the Socialism of fools. Anti-Semitic partied had only limited appeal before the dislocations of the war and the Great Depression.

The Ruling class in Nazi Germany, was made up of the Nazi Party hierarchy, top civil servants, top military leaders and the top industrialists. The industrialists and rural aristocrats supported the Nazi's because the Nazi's protected their class interests by preventing lower class rebellion and the resultant redistribution of their wealth. The military brass supported the Nazi's plans for rearmament and German expansion.

Neuman shows that the Nazi ideology had no rational philosophy behind it and concluded as early as 1941, when the book was first published and Nazi Germany was undefeated and seemed to be invincible, Neumann concluded that even if Germany won the war, the essential irrationality of the Nazi ideology would eventually cause the regime's downfall. The edition that I just read, included some appendixes' written in 1944, that provides updates for the information in the book.

Good book --- Often over my head on matter I know little about --- Law for example. That's a plus however, being over my head, because I would rather struggle through something and haved learned something than to breeze through something and learn nothing. I'd say if you wish to know something of National Socialism --- this is it.

Not just for teens!

OK, I’ve left my teenage years well behind now but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a great teen novel – and this is one such story. With well written characters, plenty of teenage angst, a mystery to solve and relationships to explore this is a story full of twists, turns and incidents to keep the reader, whatever their age, entertained.

Sloane Whitaker is forced to move for her senior year from her home in New York to Austin. She resents the move but knows it is her own fault because of the ‘Incident’, which has left her with a police record. Her father and brother have stayed in New York so she’s determined to get back on her Mum’s good side so the two of them can move back asap!

The two have moved into the house next door to her Mum’s BFF college friend but the friend has warned Sloane’s Mum about her son, Tru, so Sloane has also been warned to steer clear of involvement with him. A bit difficult for graphic artist Sloane when he jumps up to join her on the roof outside her bedroom on her first day in her new home, then the Head at her new school sets him on as her school guide! As if that wasn’t bad enough, he’s cute, attractive and she’s finding him hard to resist.

Sloane has her own secrets – including the ‘Incident’ and her online graphic work. Tru also has secrets and is nothing like Sloane had been led to believe. When members of the senior graphic art class start being targeted by malicious events, Sloane and Tru need to work together to expose the perpetrator before she, too, succumbs to their malicious actions.

Where new friends aren’t always what they seem, this story explores relationships, starting at a new school, physical abuse, secrets, solving mysteries and has a hint of romance. It is an enthralling read which I thoroughly enjoyed escaping into.

Ten Things Sloane Hates About Tru

My Thoughts: I wasn’t sure what I was really getting into as I started this one. I remember requesting it originally and knowing it sounded good but I randomly decided to read it one night on my kindle.

And I thought it was a cute story! We are introduced to Sloane who has gotten into some trouble at her old school so her mother uproots her and they decide to go away for a little while so Sloane can start over. New school, new friends, new life.

Sloane and her mother move into a nice little house next door to her mom’s old friend. She has a son named Tru. Tru is popular and a good guy. But even though people believe he’s a good guy he gets into a lot of trouble. And he’s mischievous. Sloane’s mom tells her to stay away from him!

I just knew from the first night he jumped up on her roof things were gonna be crazy! And sweet, and romantic. Tru and Sloane become friends and someone ends up doing the exact same thing at Sloane’s new school that she got into trouble for at the old school. And, of course some blame Tru. The culprit turns out to be the person I thought it may be. Kind of suspected that.

I really did enjoy this one. I thought it was cute and I enjoyed getting to know Tru and Sloane both.

Overall: This one was a very fast read for me. And though it does have some deep lessons it was a cute and fun read. I just loved learning about Sloane’s art but I also liked seeing Tru’s deep personality! Very nice! I'd probably rate this between a 3.5 and 4 cupcake rating!

Books of Love Book Review: Then Things Sloane Hates About Tru by Tera Lynn Childs

A totally enjoyable read. I literally found myself liking the two main characters and felt that these were two people who are trying to deal with what life has thrown at them. Both Sloane and Tru are two teenagers who have some pretty serious things to contend with. Sloane and Tru know that nothing is ever what it seems.

I really found that Sloane seems to be someone who has to start over. No one wants to start over, especially her. She has been forced to move to Texas with her mother for her senior year. There are new rules and restrictions. We get told what she did was extremely bad. I like that she is really trying hard not to lose her cool. Her mother says that our actions have consequences not just for ourselves, but others as well. I think that Sloane has a very hard road ahead of her.

Tru also has secrets of his own. He likes his new neighbor and thinks that she is going to make things interesting. Sloane immediately thinks that he is quite a pain to be really honest. The way they talked and acted right from the start was so definitely real. I think that Tru likes to project a different front to the outside world rather than the one he is dealing with at home. His father abuses him physically but makes sure that no one can see the signs of it. It weighs on him heavily at times. I think that he realizes that this is a bad situation but because of his father being in a position of power, that no one might believe him.

The chemistry between Sloane and Tru is interesting. I like that the author decided to take time to develop their friendship before getting them into a relationship. I like that both Sloane and Tru really develop that first. The other thing that I like is that they both go to the same school and find out that they both have different forms of art. They also seem to have some of the same group of people they hang out with. There is a huge kinship that develops between the two of them. I really love how Sloane tells him and Aimleigh what she did in New York. It was an action that was stupid because it got other people fired and without a job. Not to mention she is here in Texas now. Tru gains new respect for her.

Also the other thing that I enjoyed about this book was how the relationships they have with other people like their parents changes and evolves in very realistic ways. I also like how Sloane tells off at one point Tash that she is being selfish and that their actions had consequences. Tash is her best friend from New York. It was interesting to see that people are growing as characters. Also we learn that someone is doing some things to the other girls in the school. We learn some surprising things about Aimleigh. Aimleigh has been good friends with Sloane, but Sloane realizes that she is not a good person after a few things happened.

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

Informative and clearly written and well organized.

This book is very informative, clearly written and well organized. One must have knowledge of wild crafting (plant gathering) and a pretty good knowledge of chemistry to take full advantage of what it has offer. It provides excellent and concise information on herbal effect and very clear warnings. Some good recipes also.

This fascinating book investigates the habitat, cultivation, historical use, chemical structure and benefits of nineteen psycho-active herbs. These plants are discussed by chapter in the following categories: Stimulants (including Damiana, Passionflower and Guarana), Depressants (including Lobelia, Skullcap and Valerian), Narcotics (Wild Lettuce and Wormwood), Hallucinogens (including Kava Kava, Yohimbe, Amanita Muscaria, Morning Glory Seed and Psilocybe Mushroom). Their preparation, ritual use, primary effects and potential hazards are described in detail.
Some of the benefits that may be derived from the wise use of these plants include stress relief (Kava Kava and Valerian Root), increased energy (Guarana), restful sleep and cleansing (Wormwood) and spiritual development (Fly Agaric, Psilocybe). The author writes with great authority, effortlessly blending scientific and esoteric knowledge. I enjoyed his no-nonsense factual approach. A well written resource on some of the more potent herbs

One in the series of books by Richard Alan Miller. (The others being "Magical and Ritual use of Perfumes" with Iona Miller, and "magical and Ritual Use of Aphrodisiacs") This book is a typical example of the attention to detail, clarity of writing, and concise nature that I have come to expect from the author.
Covering some of the more Pharmocologically active herbs,the coverage is complete enough for my friends in the medical feilds, without losing readers with less chemistry knowledge (like me). There are diagrams of the active chemical compounds, when known, and lots of details about growth and habitat, but the directions and hazards of use are clear enough for a novice.
While not covering the more common herbs, such as Rosemary, or sage, this book is a valued part of my herbal library. I sincerely hope that the author writes a more wide ranging book on herbs in the future! Definately worth every penny.

A hard find

If you have ADHD, and are a visual and auditory learn like me THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU. This book gives has pictures (wish they were colored in) that correspond to the disease and they have pnuemonics to go along with them. "Cold and clammy, give'em some candy" for hypoglycemic and then they show them shivering. I used the book after my 2nd test and when I tried to picture the disease I closed my eyes and saw a guy shivering with sweaty palms and BAM remembered the saying. Now thats just for 1 of the 100 disease processes they made pictures for but it helps. I would get this along with Mosby Pharmacology flip book, Mosby Pathophysiology as well as the Memory Notebook of Nursing vol 1 all of which have these pictures and quirky sayings on them to help you remember what is what. Ya its a lot of money but whats cheaper re-doing a semster or buying a book that lets you past the test the first time.

Good supplement to your studies.

I used this book along with volume one for my Diabetes Exam. It has cute, fun ways to help remember important points of study. I think volume one had better pages for diabetes than this one, but it still has good information. I plan on using the books throughout the rest of nursing school.

A Time Honoured Classic

As live-aboard cruisers, we have frequent uses for knots, bends and hitches. We have several instructional books on knotting and splicing, and the best remains "The Marlinspike Sailor" by Hervey Garrett Smith, published in 1956. Smith's explanations and illustrations stand the test of time. They are the clearest and easiest to follow of any instructions we've found. Invariably, we always pull out "The Marlinespike Sailor" when we're at loose ends!

A Really Well Written & Presented Book

If you are a Pontiac Guy and you're looking for a book to rebuild that vintage engine, this is the book for you. Clearly fills a big void out there. Well written, not overly technical, it's sort of the "Rebuilding a Pontiac Engine for Dummies." (This is a compliment).

More of a reference than a how to.

There are a few great tips and some really great information and ideas but its really to short to really cover a true rebuild. There is however some really great information and some good ideas and tips for prepping and actually performing some of the procedures of a rebuild. There are also several http links for websites and info on the web.

Excellent Book on Pontiac Engines...

Rocky Rotella has firmly established himself as one of the upper echelon of Pontiac writers. His work as a contributor for High Performance Pontiac has consistently been of the highest caliber and so when it came for him to start writing books on the Pontiac V-8, we had high expectations. As we expected, he came through with a high-quality, very usable manual for the proper building procedures.

ng to end. He covers the planning stages, parts location, tool selection and finding the right machine shop before any work begins. With a solid plan formulated, he then shows you the proper procedures for the teardown, inspecting and cataloging of used components, deciding what can be reused and what needs replacing. He also provides a thorough rundown on the factory-supplied parts as well as the current state of aftermarket parts for Pontiac V-8s. He also advises the reader in the areas where an aftermarket replace- ment is superior to a factory piece.

From there, he provides a step-by-step guide to the re- machining, pre-assembly and assembly, as well as the proper procedures for initial startup, break-in and tuning for maximum performance and efficiency.

As if that wasn't already a great book, Rocky finishes off the book with several high-performance engine builds. Here you will find everything from a mildly-upgraded 389 Tri- Power from Dave Bisschopp at SD Performance, a street/strip 421 Tri-Power from Butler Performance and for the truly sneaky, a Pure Stock-style Ram Air 400 and a F.A.S.T. (Factory Appearing Street Tire) 462 cubic-inch Ram Air II with 14.0:1 compression!

Rocky does a great job with the topic and if you are looking to restore the engine in your Pontiac, this is a great book.
