Necessary But Could Be So Much Better

Dorsch and Dorsch's Understanding Anesthesia Equipment is simply the most thorough book on anesthesia equipment out there that I am aware of. You will find most of the general basics of anesthesia equipment in Barash's Clinical Anesthesia and even more summary books like Stoelting's Basics of Anesthesia) and Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology. Nevertheless, those books tend to not give you the ins-and-outs of all of the various equipment out there. Dorsch & Dorsch provide very detailed information ad nauseum. However, the endless black-and-white diagrams and black-and-white photos (though it appears very accurate) make the book very difficult to find the precise information that you are looking for. And the black-and-white diagrams tend to be much more difficult to understand than is necessary. For a book that has been through so many revisions and costs well upward of a hundred bucks, I would expect some color photos and some better constructed color diagrams.

The book does seem thorough, but is simply so much more difficult to use than it needs to be. Using Dorsch & Dorsch as a base text, we are strongly in need of a full revision aimed at formatting, photo, and diagram revisions.

The website included in the book offers a searchable text and a test bank. The search engine on the text is poor and very difficult to use. I find myself going to the chapter of interest and using a ctrl-f browser-based search of the page. The online quizzes are the exact same as is found at the end of each chapter. I have taken about half of the quizzes and have found errors in the online-based quiz bank in approximately half of those that I took. In need of some quality control. Nevertheless, I am appreciative of the online access to the text.

Disappointed

I am sad that this will be the last volume by authors I have relied on since I began in anesthesia in 1981. This is my third purchase of one of their works but I must say that I am dissappointed. Much of the charm of earlier editions (I own 1st and 4th) seems to be missing and there seems to be a reliance on manufacturer's supplied illustrations. Explanations and diagrams seem to come directly from the manufactuer.

That being said I would still recommend this book to students (both SRNAs and Resident physcians)as a required text. This book will alow you to be competent to trouble shoot a system while waiting for BME to arrive,or for you to feel confident to swap a machine in the middle of a case. It gives you a familiarization of much adjunct equipment before you use it the first time. It apprises you of possible hazards and deals with evnvironmental issues in anesthetizing locations.

Not their best work, but have not seen anyone else consistently cover this topic over the span of their work. A replacement will be hard to find, and future practitioners will suffer with their retirement.

its a "stay at home book" tho
big and heavy
the pages are not as easy to read since its all black and white and there's alot of material to read plus the pictures are not as many as i would have liked
but still a very good book
glad i got it for my residency
always on top of my info because of it

Not recommended

I agree with the previous reviewer. It's boring and difficult to read.

I am an intensivist and, every time I try reading this book, I give up in 15-30 minutes. I find microbiology and infectious diseases very interesting, and I enjoy reading everything by Dr. Crislip, including his excellent mobile app. So it's not the science that bothers me, it's the dry presentation of a bad teacher. It's also way too expensive for what's inside.

I strongly advise you to buy something else. I honestly don't know where the glowing reviews are from.

Has Proven Useful on Numerous Occasions

I bought this book for my neuroscientist son who wanted to understand his own illnesses. Turns out, it is useful as a guide for making either recommendations or informed decisions when communicating with your doctor.

For example, we've both been dealing with recurrent sinus and ear infections and this book clearly states which of the many antibiotic options might be best for that illness.

I highly recommend this book as a good addition to the educated person's book shelf.

This is a great "brush up"book for those long out of school. It gives you a better understanding about what is going on in hospitals, introduces molecular science and pathophysiology that did not exist and current thinking on different bugs. All in a book you can actually sit down and read without any pain what-so-ever.

The youngh student had borrowed my volume and returned it the same condition as I had lent it. This showed responcibility. Joseph F. Brian J. McPartland is an electrical construction consultant and editor of Electrical Design and Installation magazine. He is a co-author of McGraw-Hill’s National Electrical Code Handbook. Steven P. McPartland is an engineer for GE/Northern Electrical Supply Company, and an instructor for the New Jersey State Apprenticeship Training Program. Jack E. Good but not as good as the handbook

I have both the calculations book by Brian McPartland and the NEC Handbook by Brian and his dad Joe. I prefer the handbook more, although you may want both. My problem with this book is that it was not proofed adequately for math errors and typos. I have found at least four computational errors in the examples.
I am not to impressed with this book because it does not take you too far beyond the examples already in the NEC or beyond the obvious. The explainations of why they are computing things the way they are (logic behind the computations) are all explained in the Handbook. Many of the examples are merely duplications of the handbook examples. If you want one good book, buy the Handbook. Don't waste money on the NEC handbooks published by NFPA. They merely waste space by quoting the NEC with some useless comments thrown in. McPartland is the only guy who has ever written a handbook worth having that goes in depth as to why the code is the way it is.

A lot better than I thought!

I was really skeptical at first. And I thought that I wouldn't like it because I like to draw in my bible and make notes of what GOD speaks to me while I read it. I wanted a English/Portuguese parallel bible because I don't speak Portuguese and we are going to a Portuguese speaking country for a month. What I didn't think about is that in other countries most of the time people aren't really receptive to a bible, so this is good. :) And most of the time the way that my bible looks would scare someone. You can make notes on the kindle and highlight things, but it just looks neater! Not to mention that I couldn't find one bible that was English/Portuguese online or in the store, we tried all kinds of options. Anyway, this is a good line for line bible. One verse of English, one verse of Portuguese. Very practical! :) Hope this helps you!

An excellent way to work on your portuguese

This is a rare and wonderful find! There are so few bilingual English/Portuguese books out there. And, often times, the less expensive digital books do not properly represent the extended-latin characters (the 'special' Portuguese characters). But with this book, the characters all appear to be correct. This is a great way to facilitate learning the language. Highly recommended.
