Dense as granite, but solidly reliable

This is one of the few books that give actual hard information on the cuisine in China. Since it is not a cookbook, it does not intend to adapt local cookery to a more international audience, but rather documents the cultural and historical significance of larger elements of Chinese cuisine. It also is helpful in identifying the movements and migrations of products throughout Asia, which is quite helpful for serious scholars of Asian cuisines in general.

It's dense as a block of igneous rock, and certainly not for everyone, but definitely a good buy if you take the cuisine seriously.

My only complaint aside from the density is that a good amount of the data is out of date, from the early teens to the late thirties, which misses the PRC's reign almost entirely. It feels like a snapshot in time before the cuisine was heavily damaged by cultural bleaching.

Spiritual Practices for everybody

The book Spiritual Traditions for the Contemporary Church by Robin Maas and Gabriel O'Donnell, OP, is one of my favourite academic texts for use in the study of Christianity. It was one of the very first books I encountered when starting seminary several years ago, and it continues to be used for the SPAM class (SPAM being the student-devised short-hand for Spirituality, Autobiography & Ministry class that most incoming seminarians take). The course is a survey of both the history of and current embodiment of Christian practices across denominations and communities. Many people come to seminary with little experience of Christianity beyond their own particular denominations; some come with little experience outside their own parishes or particular congregations. Those who know more often know it in an academic sense; they have rarely been to other services or engaged in other practices. Some are not even well-versed in their own histories. One point of the course is to help people understand and recognise practices in their own lives.
This goal is well-served in part by this book by Maas and O'Donnell. The book is a combination of practicum and academic exposition. Each chapter includes a practical exercise the reader/student can engage and use to gain greater understanding from the vantage point of the `doer', as well as a section on history and explanation of denominational particularities.
Robin Maas and Garbriel O'Donnell are both editors and contributors to the text, but there is a long list of contributors who include theologians, pastors, priests, lay persons, Christian educators, and other `spirituality experts' who are familiar with practices and histories.
The goal of this book is perhaps best derived in response to a question from the first page.
`Can one spend an adult lifetime reading, teaching, thinking and writing about God and have no vital experience of God, no sense of God's presence? Indeed it is, as anyone who has spent much time in a seminary can attest.'
Many students come into seminary as seekers, and sometimes what they are seeking cannot be found in the academics of seminary teaching; sometimes what they seek is in practice, communal and private, that too often graduate school and seminary training has overlooked.
The purpose of this book is to introduce to Christians of all stripes and creeds the greater history and practice of the Church, large `C', that greater community toward whom we all imperfectly strive. Protestants, Catholics and Orthodoxers (as the three primary strands, but not, of course, the only ones) often look with wonder and suspicion upon the teachings and traditions of their fellow-travelers in the Christian community. All denominations share a common history up to a certain point; even those groups who strive to get back to a `pure Church' - problematic in formulation is ways too numerous to consider here - or a primitive, pre-divided Church, do so today only through the lens of 2000 years of history. Many people when studying Christianity give cursory thought to major thinkers and ideas prior to the foundation of their own denomination, and then begin in earnest to study the kind of Christian they happen to be, often with little appreciation for other, and often with only passing fair knowledge of the issues that caused their particular denominations to form, for such knowledge requires more in-depth study of the greater history of Christianity.
Overall Reflections
The book can sometimes be dense reading, because much history is compressed into chapters of 30-50 pages each. The practicum exercises add an interesting and unique element to this text, but really come alive if one actually engages them, rather than simply reading about them, which is a real danger for one reading this text alone. There are individual practices and group practices.
Because this book is primary intended for students in contemporary Western seminaries, not a lot of attention is given to Orthodox practice beyond the earliest times, and that is a shame. A chapter or two on contemporary Orthodox experience would be most welcome.
Ultimately, this is a book to which I refer frequently. I purchased the paperback version when I first took the class; when it became apparent to me during my first term the next year of teaching in the class that I would be using this book throughout the rest of my career as a seminarian and as a minister, I invested in the hardback edition. In fact, I now keep a copy at my office and at home. It is that valuable to me.
Robin Maas is a professor of Christian education at Wesley Theological Seminary, and Gabriel O'Donnell is a Dominican (hence, the OP after his name, which stands for Order of Preachers) professor of spiritual theology and liturgics at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC. Together they form a good pair for considering the needs of Catholics and Protestants (my concern for Orthodox inclusion is noted above).
I recommend this text for anyone who seeks greater knowledge of the culture of Christianity and the diversity of Christian practice past and present.

Introduction

From its roots in Chicago and New York clubs, House triggered the biggest musical revolution in the UK since punk, and subsequently spawned a welter of electronic genres that have altered the face of modern music and popular culture. The Rough Guide to House traces the route that this propulsive strain of dance music has taken, while pointing towards the elements that may shape its future direction. Presented in an encyclopedic format, The Rough Guide to House covers both the innovators and crucial exponents of House - whether they be producers, DJs, bands or record labels. So what exactly is House? Originally (some would argue it still is) a mutation of disco, House can be widely defined as electronic music with a rhythm set in a 4/4 tempo. While this definition neatly distinguishes House from the abstractions of Techno and the breakbeat foundations of Trip-Hop and drum 'n' bass, it fails to acknowledge the genre's most compelling attribute: its fundamental ability to inspire by bonding emotive, synthesised melodies to locked rhythms. It's this marriage of melody and groove which has formed perhaps the most exciting dancefloor proposition since the birth of disco itself.

House music's roots reside in the hedonistic gay club scene of mid-'70s New York. Manhattan-based DJs such as Walter Gibbons and Larry Levan provided the initial platform for disco to mutate into House by extending and recreating singles from disco labels like Salsoul, Prelude and West End to construct repetitive, hypnotic mantras built to fire up the dancers at clubs like The Paradise Garage (the club which would give House's R&B-soaked cousin its name, garage).

But House music was truly developed in Chicago, initially as a result of Brooklyn-born DJ Frankie Knuckles' residency at the city's Warehouse club in 1977. Like the DJs in New York, he began to alter the raw material of the music he spun at the club by adding pre-programmed drum rhythms from his Roland 909 to the mix to keep the groove constant, thus forming the blueprint for the 4/4 tempo of House, whose name derived from that of his club.

By the early to mid-'80s elemental cuts by Knuckles' disciples, Jamie Principle and Jesse Saunders, began to distinguish themselves from disco with a sound characterised by its raw synthesised energy and simple, skeletal drum patterns. By the mid-'80s Knuckles and another deck virtuoso, DJ Ron Hardy, had influenced a core of talented young kids who seized upon the relatively cheap and easy-to-master range of synthesizers, samplers and drum machines to create their own sonic inventions. Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, DJ Pierre and Steve "Silk" Hurley created the blueprint for Acid House and Deep House with singles released by Chicago's two main independent labels, Trax and DJ International.

Mainstream America was never likely to accept music born from black, gay disco, though, and it was a youth culture bored to death by the materialist aesthetic of the Thatcher era in Britain which catalysed the Acid House explosion. Oh yeah, there was also a little something called Ecstasy, but club music and drug consumption have almost always gone hand-in-hand. Pioneered in the UK by DJs such as Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling and Mike Pickering, British technicians like A Guy Called Gerald, Baby Ford and Bang The Party emerged to stamp their own style on the genre and irreversibly set in motion House music's domination of British dancefloors. It's a combination of all these factors that led to House's mainstream acceptance and subsequent diversification.

But this is only an outline of the music's history. There's no room here to detail the further importance of New York and Chicago, of Ibiza, Manchester, London, Italy and Paris, of the countless other producers/DJs whose contributions have been pivotal. Instead, that's all broken down into individual entries and detailed inside, providing a comprehensive, but by no means detached, guide to House music.

An important book tracing the people, tunes and labels.

Finally, a book on house music capturing the pop sensibilities of the MTV generation, the historical coverage of the New York Times and the song significance of dance music magazines. With a cover graced by none other than Armand Van Helden, HOUSE: The Rough Guide breaks down this musical subgenre in small easily digestible doses.
In keeping with the MTV mindset of short attention spans, HOUSE provides synopses highlighting the salient points of significant contributions DJ's (e.g. Masters at Work, DJ Pierre), producers (e.g. Mood II Swing, Basement Jaxx) and labels (e.g. Nervous, Salsoul) have made to House music. Very much like a NY Times investigative story, Bidder's Rough Guide leaves no stone unturned, reporting on names both past and present in the house music game from Robert Owens to Adeva to Daft Punk to Bobby Konders. The book serves as an excellent resource and reference for beginners to gain knowledge about the genre, for intermidiate house lovers to further their education and for advanced house users as a reference tool to key people.
One added bonus, the book not only covers the people and the labels, but it also names the tunes that catapulted to stardom.

I take this little book with me everytime I go record shopping. Concise and accurate histories of all the DJ's and record labels that make house music what it is. If you're a house DJ, buy it! I guarantee you'll learn a thing or two, even if you've been a DJ forever.

About the Author
Swami Satyananda Saraswati was born 1923 at Almora (Uttaranchal) into a family of farmers. His ancestors were warriors and many of his kith and kin down the line, including his father, served in the army and police force. However, it became evident that Swami Satyananda had a different bent of mind, as he began to have spiritual experiences at the age of six, when his awareness spontaneously left the body and he saw himself lying motionless on the floor. Many saints and sadhus blessed him and reassured his parents that he had a very developed awareness. This experience of disembodied awareness continued, which led him to many saints of that time such as Anandamayi Ma. Swami Satyanada also met a tantric bhairavi, Sukhman Giri, who gave him shaktipat and directed him to find a guru in order to stabilize his spiritual experiences. In 1944 at the age of nineteen, Swami Satyananda met his guru Swami Sivananda and came to live at Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh. In 1947, he took the vow of sanyasin or monastic renunciation and became a swami. He served in different departments at the ashram for over 12 years. He did physical labor, edited the ashram's Hindi journal, wrote various articles and composed poems in both Hindi and Sanskrit. He wrote a translation and commentary in the English language of the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad by Swami Sivananda. Upon leaving the ashram in 1956, he wandered throughout India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Burma and Ceylon for the next 7 years, extending his knowledge of spiritual practices. He eventually found his way to Munger, in the province of Bihar. After establishing himself there, in 1963 he founded the International Yoga Fellowship and the Bihar School of Yoga a year later. He lectured and taught globally for the next twenty years and authored a number of books which are considered among the most revered in the field of yoga and yogic philosophy, and remain popular to this day. In 1988, he retired from active involvement in teaching and handed active work of his ashram and organization to his senior disciple Swami Niranjanananda. He lived in seclusion as a Paramahamsa Sannyasin performing higher spiritual and vedic sadhanas. Paramahamsa Swami Satyananda took "Sajeeva Samadhi" at his ashram in Rikhia, Jharkand on December 5th, 2009.

An incredibly clear and concise path to self-realization

There are a couple reviews here that do a great job of briefly explaining this book's amazing and unbelievably detailed contents so I won't head down that path. I will say that this is the path of yoga for the spiritually-inclined. Asanas are definitely part of the course, but in contrast to most other styles, a large amount of your time is spent in breath work and meditation which is not surprising given that Raja yoga (regarded as the most meditation-intensive supreme path of yoga) is a large part of Saytananda yoga. In fact, the more you progress, you realize that the asanas/postures are really just preparing you for meditation (kind of like stretching before running a marathon)

After practicing the first 7 lessons (7 months) of the book at home I decided to get serious about Satyananda Yoga and started looking for a teacher. As it turns out, there are only 4 fully accredited Satyananda teachers in North America (yes you read that correctly!) as it takes 3 to 5 years of intensive study to achieve that designation (as opposed to about 1 month to get a basic 200-hour yoga certificate elsewhere) and they have only started training Satyananda teachers in North America about 5 years ago. As all 4 of the teachers are in Cleveland Ohio, I took a flight out there to start my journey down this amazing path and hope to join the ranks of Satyananda teachers in a few years.

If you are a serious and disciplined aspirant and are interested in the practice of yoga for rapid spiritual evolution (as opposed to simply for health and fitness), then this is the path for YOU.

Comprehensive textbook on kriya yoga

This is a great book for people who are serious enough to start a daily yoga practice but for whom it is not feasible to go on an extended pilgrimage to an ashram or other yoga retreat. It does require a long-term commitment of regular practice and is not ideal for people who are absolute beginners or just dabbling.

The course within this book outlines the essentials of the entire yoga lifestyle and therefore includes information not only on yoga postures, but also on some of the esoteric practices including yogic breathing, cleansing, diet, philosophy, and chakra meditations. However, it is one specific system (or path) to yoga and should not be mixed with other systems i.e. if you choose this path, stick to this one alone.

Magnum Opus

I am a graduate student doing my Phd in Electrical Engineering but yoga and meditation are my hobbies (along with hiking and biking).
As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, this book is one of the most comprehensive, articulate and informative book I have found so far on meditation and yoga.
The book emphasizes that, 'There is no need to believe before hand that the techniques will work. Practice and you will know it to be true'.
The book starts with Hatha yoga, basic asanas and progresses through basic breathing techniques. Along the way it gives an in-depth analysis of various forms of yoga - Karma yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti yoga, etc.
It emphasizes that these different yogas complement each other and do not go against each other.
Some people might ask, well isn't there 'one god'. Shouldn't there be one path? This is a narrow way of looking at things. Sure there is one 'Mount Everest' but there are probably many different ways to get to the base-camp!
And each has its own scenic views and obstacles.
Same with the different yogas. Pick one that best suits your personality or better integrate a few of them - E.g. Karma yoga (This is easy to begin - If you work everyday!), Bhakti yoga (Prayer, devotion,etc) and Raja yoga (Breathing, Meditations,etc).
The book gives precise instructions especially in the breathing techniques and gives it to you in steps, so that you can measure your progress and move onto the next level.
The book moves onto advanced kriya techniques towards the end of the book (these require some level of mastery over postures and breathing techniques).
This is a book to keep for a lifetime and go through again and again to understand and integrate more knowledge as one progresses on the path.
