About the Author

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is both the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet, although he describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. He was born in 1935 and, at the age of two, was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama. In 1959, with the Chinese suppression of the Tibetan national uprising in Lhasa, His Holiness was forced into exile. Since then he has been living in Dharamsala in northern India, the seat of the Tibetan political administration in exile.

In 1989 His Holiness was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. He is the first Nobel Laureate to be recognized for his concern for global environmental issues. He has received many awards, honorary doctorates, and other accolades in recognition of his message of peace, nonviolence, interreligious understanding, universal responsibility, and compassion. He is also the author of more than 70 books.

The way life really was in the North Country....

In reading this book, you feel as if you are right there with the author in the Northwest Territories. The adventurous spirit of this husband and wife (the first white woman ever to venture into this area of the North) is so inspiring. They regale the hardships and joys of running a wilderness trap line and dealing with the natives. This book was so well written that you are actually experiencing their emotions with them as you read about their successes and failures. If you are interested in pioneer life or enjoy wilderness stories, then this is definitely the book for you. It gave me such an incredible respect and appreciation for their hard work. It also makes you greatful for those who dared to venture and lay the footwork for any desiring to follow their dream.

Mink Mary and Me

I first read Mink Mary and Me,in the early 50's when I was just starting high school and a head full of adventure and almost old enough to purchase my first hunting licence. I loved this book then, and was lucky enough to purchase a copy, off this site a few weeks ago. It is a rare and expensive book, but worth any money you spend on it. Chick Ferguson took his wife (one of the first white women that far north) to a cabin 100 miles north near Providence, north west of Great Slave Lake in the North West Territories.It is about their adventure and struggle with the natives, animals and elements of the north trying to eek out a living during the depression. It is full of adventure and excitement. If you can beg borrow or buy this book do so. You will not put it down. I have read a lot of the books on the north and this tops all but Alone in the wilderness by Bob Swerer. Enjoy

Mink, Mary, & Me, was one of the best books I have ever read. It was full of suspense, & action, and at times very sad, too. Overall I would rate it excellent. I have never really been interested in trapping, but this was an exception.

Is there life after big brother?

Despite its title, this book is not really a sequel to George Orwell's 1984 (1984). It is a satirical look at what happens when an authoritarian government collapsesm, based loosely on the Hungarian and Czech uprisings. The story, complied by a future historian living in Hong Kong, brings together primary source material on what happens in the months after the death of Big Brother. The primary source material is largely taken from the principal characters in 1984 (Winston Smith, Julia, O'brien, etc.) complied by an increasing deranged historian.

Of course, from a purist perspective this is impossible. Big brother cannot die and I do not think that the structure of INGSOC can be so easily dismantaled. But this is not the point...the book looks at the conflict in a revolutionary society as different factions vie for power and for their idelogical goals.

Not a great book but an interesting (and short) read.

A satirical sequel of a satire

This book is really meant to follow 1984 as those who are not familiar with the Orwellian classic will not be able to follow the plot enough to enjoy it to it's fullest. I found it sharp, hilarious, and a great read.

This book isn't just for fans of country style, for the variety of patterns will attract many sewers, and folk art influences many of the squares as well. Using the four different techniques of appliqued, embroidered, pieced, and template-pieced, Saffiote's patterns are challenging but eye-catching and unique. Drab, crooked-looking blocks...

I guess I was looking for something different when I purchased 301 Country Christmas Quilt Blocks. What I was looking for was a quilt block book with Christmas themes. What was included in this book, was a large majority of reworked patterns, that could've suited any time of year except for the coloring. This book relied almost exclusively on appliqué to make the blocks look 'Christmasy.' As someone who likes to machine quilt and not appliqué, this was disappointing.
There were plenty of photos in this book, but the colors of the quilt blocks looked quite drab to me. To achieve the 'country' look they are sewn crookedly. Ughh.. Not my cup of tea. Also, I wanted to see more full-sized items, such as a bedspread or a throw. Most of the quilt examples were of single blocks, with no visual of how they would look in a larger-sized piece. Personally, I don't think they'd look all that great, as anything except a throw pillow. One crooked block is charming... Many crooked blocks = eyestrain.
While you might find some fun ideas in this book, I felt a tad let down by the contents. I've wanted to quilt a full-sized christmas quilt for a while, and nothing in this book caught my eye.

Imperfection is freeing

I disagree with other reviewers who took issue with the quality of the "country" ideas in this book. I think the charming irregularities and imperfections in the quilt blocks are wonderful! I think it frees me up as a quilter!

This book is for impatient quilters who want to create something pretty without the tediousness of perfect piecing. True, the tea-dye brown gets redundant, but I think this book's strong point is that it allows for individual variation in the spirit of the home made "country" look.

A lot of the patterns could easily be transformed into paper piecing or could be done using traditional pieced quilt blocks in similar "country" fabrics. The applique is rough and free-formed and so could be customized to suit one's own taste. I recommend this book!

Great book--Bad Kindle version

This edited volume presents a viable argument for anthropology as a needed discipline for not only discovering the exotic 'Other,' but also for shedding light on all kinds of social issues around the globe. The variety of topics as well as the inclusion of quite a bit of material based in Europe was helpful, particularly since my focus is on European Anthropology.

My only complaint is that the Kindle version is very poorly edited. Multiple sentences are missing words--often the first word in the sentence.

Now everybody can make cheese with Jean Mansfield, even if you’re not lucky enough to live in New Zealand.

A good friend introduced me to Jean Mansfield’s books and videos several years ago. Much as I adore cooking, I never considered making cheese until Jean showed me the fun I’d been missing. With her skillful guidance, I quickly found myself wholly smitten with this ancient art.

Once content to buy cheese from my local fromagerie, more often than not I find myself reaching for Jean’s recipes and tips for culinary inspiration. Her handy checklist and step-by-step instruction instill confidence amongst the most reticent fromagère.

This book is as close as you can get to having a master cheesemaker in the kitchen with you. Jean has thought of everything the novice and skilled cheesemaker needs to know. She offers the practical advice only someone with decades of hands-on-experience can impart. I especially appreciate her chapter on “What Went Wrong.” All cookery books should have a section like this but they never do. Knowing what can go wrong helps us avoid some of the common pitfalls encountered when mastering a new skill.

While you probably won’t make all fifty plus cheeses featured here, you will get a lot of pleasure and practical tutoring from this exceptionally detailed book. Now everybody can make cheese with Jean Mansfield, even if you’re not lucky enough to live in New Zealand.
