The Age-Old Sailboat Book Problem

One never likes having to buy it new. Still, there are reasons to like the Weygandt, Kimmel and Kieso Sailboat series including this 6th edition of Financial Accounting (Financial Accounting I). These authors have done everything to make the subject progressively more accessible in each edition. I know as I suffered through the courses once too. I have a master's in accounting and am a CPA. It's surprising how many accounting texts assume the student has certain prerequisite skills and knowledge and equally surprising how so many accounting professors want to lecture beyond the level of the students, which is not so easy to do when using the Sailboat Financial Accounting book. These are really teaching books. I buy used recent editions for myself just for reference since they're so well done and so cheap. Not all CPAs do that but I practice financial accounting and train accountants.

You'd be lucky if the professor is permissive enough to go with the 5th edition because most students quickly sell these books once the course is over, so used editions are MUCH cheaper. But professors insist on the most recent edition. Also, the authors anticipate that everyone wants to use the cheaper previous edition, so they always change the end of chapter problems. The publisher also provides the professors with additional materials including exam materials, so there's always the incentive for the professor to use the latest edition.

These are serious heavy books. This one is 938 pages and you have to know the material by the time the course is finished. No wonder so many people, despite knowing that good accountants tend to stay employed in a recession, won't even consider this route. But at least these Sailboat books are hardcover with large dimensions and quality paper and binding. Nothing is worse than using a thick softcover text that feels like a phone book. Unfortunately they're expensive new, and you might one day be buying the 10th edition used for a fraction of this price.

Note also that you don't get a WileyPlus access code with this book, in case your professor requires you to use this resource. You can go to the WileyPlus website and buy an access code for usually about $75 or see what your college bookstore charges in the event that they sell it.

Finally, a word of caution and encouragement: This course, along with Intermediate Accounting, are often the courses that usually weed students out from the accounting major program. They are not easy courses and require more study time than a typical course. You can get supplementary materials too such as more basic accounting books if you need them. Very Good Book

I borrowed several books form the local libraary to get an understanding of double entry accounting; none were very good. This book explained the topic quite well with a case study that overlapped two chapters. Gets a bit confusing with the colored "what's important" suggested areas but if you can look past this and do a bit of discernment

Somewhat childish of a book (I know, it's accounting), but maybe that's because I'm used to dif-eq and relativity. The book is overall good and explains a lot, but much of it is through example (which is nice) but without a solid definition (which is not).

Thoroughly fulfilling book

What a surprisingly fulfilling book. I have to admit I was a bit put off by the author's cheesy pen name but I'm glad I didn't let that stop me from purchasing it.
I really prefer reviews that focus more on what the book made me feel but I'll give a brief summary of the plot: Shendar is a wealthy and peaceful kingdom. It's unusual in that the heirs are always from the women's line, ensuring the kingdom stays within the family. Queen Shian is merely fourteen, so her older brother, Prince Cray, acts as regent until she is of age. Unfortunately, a natural disaster has prompted a warrior tribe into trying to invade Shendar. Therefore it is decided to seek aid from the strong, neighboring kingdom. That kingdom's heir, Prince Reston, along with his brother, Revi, come for negotiations. It appears that they are amenable to lending aid if their countries become bound by a marriage contract. With little options, Shian and Cray agree but Cray believes his sister is too young to share a marriage bed. However, Reston says he'll honor their contract if Cray would act as substitute.
This book richly explored the emotional, political and personal ramifications such a choice would involve. It was also interesting to see the delicate balance Cray had to keep in order to satisfy his duty to his people, his sister and himself. Despite that focus, the aspect of war wasn't overlooked or forgotten and a darker secret that Reston nursed was always hinted at which was intriguing but not distressing because I never doubted Reston's sincerity once.
A really enjoyable read. It was never boring but neither was it outrageously thrilling but rather steadily and thoroughly enjoyable. That may not seem too complimentary but it is. Sometimes, I just want to read a book that I know with absolute certainty will end well for everyone and doesn't send me hurdling through a whirlwind of emotions. Very pleasing.

Can't wait for another one...

This was a very good book, from start to finish. The characters were interesting, and the plot was engaging, and the author's writing style really made their world come alive. I thoroughly enjoyed the developing relationship between Reston and Cray, but I also enjoyed seeing Shian's growth throughout the book, and how she learned from her experiences. The sex was hot but definitely did not overwhelm the story, as I often find is the case in the m/m genre. All in all, a great book from a very promising author, and well worth purchasing. I would really enjoy more books set in this world, but until then this one will definitely be on my list to re-read.

Disappointing book after enthusiastically reading THE WIZARD of BRIGHT ISLE SERIES and THE FALL OF THE DRAGON KING

Is this the same author who wrote these other works? The plot basically revolves around the bed scenes by our two main characters. Everything else appears secondary to the story. Come on now, must I really endure at least six occasions of detailed love making? Personally, I'm reading m/m novels for a different take on a story but not for excessive eroticism. BTW, get this one. We have one guy never having sex with either gender who accepts the receptive role . He never voices an interest in taking a dominant position. Is this for real?

Now, listen up. The premise is our prince takes the place of his sister due to her age in the conjugal bed. The last time I heard during the middle ages or ancient kingdoms of the past young ladies(age 14 or younger) took partners due to a shorter life span.

Historical inaccuracies, stereotyping same sex behavior and a dull tale does not promote recommending this book. The ending seemed unfinished when the Queen and her brother are insulted by one of their advisors without any retribution or comments. It's as if the author lost the train of thought. Let's see. We have a higher price, less pages and a poorly written story.

Knit your very own safari park like the ones you see in wildlife documentaries. There is every creature you would expect to see plus a mat to put it all on and even a couple of vehicles to visit the park. All you need is a ranger - - Or a child to play with it all, or some guests to admire it. This truly is a great way of using up all that leftover yarn and as the items are all small (apart from the mat) you can do a bit in between larger projects. This book does not teach knitting, but the author advises you to start with the mat if you are a knitting newbie as you can practise all the basic stitches (just plain knit and purl) you will need to make the animals. There are twenty-seven of these, most with young and none need a lot of knitting or toymaking know-how. All you need to start are a few basic bits and pieces - a book after my own heart as I am always complaining that so many craft books involve a major shopping spree before you can make anything. Choose from elephant, meerkat, giraffe, panda, crocodile, tiger and my favorites penguin and polar bear ( the last two are ideal for the Christmas tree). There are some less common creatures here too like a gorgeous vulture, impala and giant turtle plus a camper van, off roader and an arched gateway. Each pattern is in written form with photos of the finished creature (usually on white so you can see detail and posed with an appropriate background). Size is given, plus what you need and a difficulty level. Darling patterns, perfect for a Mobile to hang over a crib!

Very very cute - tiny toys are perfect for constructing a mobile to hang over a crib to entertain a little one...which is why I ordered this. All projects use DK yarn (or 8 ply - book is published in Great Britain). I'm pretty sure that if you wanted toys larger than the typical 2 - 4" ones in the book, you could simply use a heavier weight such as worsted and you get a larger toy. I'm a life long knitter with professional knitwear design experience and I've looked over the instructions carefully. They are written row by row, clear and usually are single page with photos on the opposite page. I appreciate that there are multiple photos of each toy which will help in placing decorative finishing stitches. Over all - this is a very nice book and I think an excellent value. 27 different breeds of animals with several sizes (Cubs) in many, plus some bonus patterns for camper vehicles and an arched entry for a safari camp. Very cute. I'm totally happy with this book!

What a delightful book! It will guarantee lots of smiles. The photos are beautiful, and I am absolutely in love with this book! The knitting is very simple and easy, and sewing instructions are clear although it may be a bit fiddly and take some time. I have been spending many happy hours making little animals.

I love knitting animals and received this book as a gift. It's great. It's helped me with my seaming and finishing a lot (I'm a proficient knitter but haven't done much seaming). I use worsted weight yarn instead of DK and it comes out fine. All patterns are knit flat and seamed (except for I-cords), so if you really want to avoid seaming this book isn't for you. As the author notes in the introduction, because some of the patterns (especially the larger animals) are similar in construction after you've done a few you can easily make your own changes to personalize your critters. If I get tired of the basic body shape of the larger mammals I flip to the later sections - there is a tortoise, a kangaroo, penguin, etc. - so it never gets boring. As others have noted, the seaming can be a bit finicky on smaller pieces and can require some patience - I've undone and redone seams 15 times to get them just right - but the seams are not very visible anyway with the exception of the chest area for some animals so it's more of a personal choice. The photos are also nice - very cute.

If you have the first edition, the patterns do have errors - Ms. Ishii has published errata on her website. Basically (if using the first edition) whenever it says to "cast on x stitches, knit these stitches, then knit y" disregard the "knit these stitches" part and include the cast on stitches in the number it tells you to knit. So if it says "cast on 4 stitches, knit these 4 stitches, then knit 14" you cast on four stitches then knit 14 total (the four you cast on and then 10 existing stitches). Ms. Ishii is also very accessible through her website and gracious if you have questions or comments. I'll definitely be picking up her other book when I get the chance.

Just the thought of quitting would cause me to panic and smoke more than usual!

I didn't want to use patches and pills, or have to rely on willpower or some kind of motivation.
Fortunately I didn't have to.

I did the course on line, with Eric talking in a whole lot of videos and MP3's. So I can't judge if the book would have worked for me like the course did.

Best First Aid Manual I have ever owned.

I have looked through many first aid manuals....Even invested in some. Between
an EMT training manual being a 10 compared to another type of manual which
has few pictures and less that adequate helpful information....this one would
definitely be an 8. Great colored pictures on each page..Step by step using
real pictures. Also the information covered....anything from bruises to head
trauma are covered What YOU as a non professional can do to mitigate
a situation. Also what items you need to have on hand and how to use them..
and why. Great book. Have not seen one better for the price..unless you want
to spend the big bucks for an EMT manual ..which would probably too much
information.

A good first aid manual for non-medical people

After having looked at a lot of books to have on hand for family members to use in case of an emergency, I finally decided on this one. Written for the non-medical person, it has lots of photos and diagrams, is clearly and simply written, and can be easily used in an emergency. I know that I may not always be present when first aid is needed, and it's nice to know that this simple guide will help my family know what to do. It would have been nice if the book went into more detail about some of the more difficult techniques for worse injuries or illnesses, but I am happy that it covers the simple first aid things well.

it's really quite good. And up to date

Well, it's DK so there are lots of pictures. Being as it's a first aid manual and not an EMT textbook, it's really quite good. And up to date. Kind of "first response for the rest of us." Clear explanations of many things, many of which aren't obvious. And free of some obvious things that are nonetheless in other, similar books (for example, "don't start CPR on someone who's been decapitated"). A little big/heavy for the average disaster-prep medic kit or auto kit, though, if that's what you want. Highly recommended.

"Since no thoroughly researched biography of Galois was available, I decided to try and fill the gap, starting off from documentation in archives, and evidence from contemporary memoirs and newspapers." (Preface)

Much of this book is about French politics during Galois' life. In the English edition, the author added a concluding 23 page essay on "The Mathematical Work of Evariste Galois". Without this addition and the bibliographical addition mentioned below, this book would be, for my interests, of no significant value.

Along with the 23 page essay on Galois' mathematics, the author included in the English translation a useful addition to the bibliography: 56 articles and books, listed chronologically, for "Studies on Classical Galois Theory", by which she means "the development of Galois ideas on resolvability of algebraic equations up to the modern abstract point of view, i.e., from Betti (1851) to Artin (1930)."

The only English language books in this list are:
Netto (1892, from German original of 1882) Theory of Substitutions and Its Application to Algebra;
Dickson (1903) Introduction to the Theory of Algebraic Equations;
Cajori (1904) An Introduction to the Modern Theory of Equations;

Emory John Michael has spent many years living and traveling abroad -- much of that time in Europe and South America.
