Travis Lowdermilk, author of "User-Centered Design," offers his top tips for building user-friendly applications

1. Steal (I mean borrow) from others.

So many developers feel like they have to create experiences from scratch. There’s absolutely no shame in looking at others’ work and implementing what you’ve learned. Obviously, I’m not advocating stealing of intellectual property, but it’s impossible to come up with amazing experiences all on your own. It takes inspiration! Don’t be afraid to learn from others.

2. Your users know more than you give them credit for.

Many developers get into mindset that the users are the enemy. They’re the angry hoard collecting outside their office door shouting, “When will it be done!” Also, some developers feel like users don’t have the technical expertise to help solve software problems. Your uses are your greatest asset when it comes to gaining new insight about your application. It’s your responsibility to give them the language so they can articulate what they need. Continually ask questions, and make sure to validate that you’re understanding the comments accurately.

3. Don’t be afraid to get creative.

So many developers I talk to say things like “I can’t draw, I could never be a designer." While I’m not going to suggest everyone can be a designer, I still believe that everyone can flex their creative muscle. Just because you can’t paint a Mona Lisa, it shouldn’t prevent you from making basic sketches of your application’s workflow. Bottom line, if you can draw three basic shapes, you can sketch a thought or a design idea. Don’t be afraid to pick up a pencil or, better yet, hand one to your users to help them express their needs.

4. Have a purpose.

I liken the software development process to painting a room. Most of the work comes in the preparation. Clearing furniture, covering the floor, cleaning and taping off surfaces, all before you apply a single drop of paint. Building an application should have the same careful attention to planning. Don’t build features for technology’s sake or just because you can. Make sure each feature in your application has a purpose and is fulfilling a need. You should be able to adequately explain each feature and why it’s in your application.

5. When all else fails, reboot.

Sometimes an application’s design gets so far from its intended design that you find yourself forgetting what problem you were trying to solve in the first place. It can be a painful process to start over, but it can also be liberating to keep what’s working and throw away what’s not.

Travis Lowdermilk has been developing custom software experiences for over 15 years in industries ranging from architecture, business, and health care. Currently, he works for a community hospital in central California. At the hospital, he creates line of business applications for clinical, financial, and performance improvement.

Predominantly using Microsoft frameworks, Travis creates solutions that employ a wide range of technologies such as: web, mobile, touch, and voice. Travis is a certified ASP.NET developer and has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration – emphasizing in Information Systems. A great primer and a helpful guide to explaining UCD to others

This book is a great introduction to the overarching concepts of user-centered design. It's not particularly in depth, but the author, Travis Lowdermilk, provides a great resource for folks that are new to UCD or who, like myself, are looking for a quick reference to use a starting point for introducing team mates to the principles behind a user centered approach to application development. The book is a quick read at 108 pages with a very useful list of online resources and more in-depth publications to dive into if you're after more detail.

The chapters cover a brief bit of definition and then move into planning, building and testing applications. Each chapter has a great recap at the end covering the high-level points made.

I will definitely be sharing this book around my office. I lead the development team in a marketing agency and work with a team of user experience and visual designers. User-Centered Design will be a helpful tool for me in guiding my own teams approach to development, and will also help the broader digital team at my agency to articulate the benefits of a user-centered approach.

By a developer for developers, the book is short, succinct, and can be read in a few short bouts of reading. Experienced developers will find that several user-centered design (UCD) practices have clearly been borrowed from, or absorbed into, classic software engineering practices.

Remainder of this review discusses the contents of each chapter.

Chapter 1 starts with "On January 9, 2007, a man quietly walked onto a stage and changed the course of technological history." That had me hooked.

Chapter 2 explains Usability, Human Computer Interaction (human factors), UCD, user experience, and how they relate to each other. It then goes on to explain UCD by describing what it isn't.

Chapter 3 is about working with users, knowing who your users are, understanding the different kinds of users, knowing when to listen to them, and when not to listen too literally.

Chapter 4 describes how to define a plan for your project. It starts with crafting a team mission statement. Project details are defined next with a title, description, stakeholders, and impact assessment. Importance of collecting user requirements without thinking about solutions follows next. That is followed by a discussion on collecting functional requirements, and how the application will solve the user requirements. The chapter proceeds with capturing data and workflow modeling, and ends with prototyping. Prototyping is also explained in greater detail in Chapter 8. Appendix A has a nice sample project template.

Chapter 5 starts with the importance of defining a manifesto or vision statement for an application. That is followed by a discussion on exercising restraint when adding features. The chapter delves into narrative, personas and scenarios, and their usage in the UCD process to refine the vision.

Chapter 6 delves into the need for creativity, and why it takes courage and hard work to exercise it. It discusses several ways for enhancing creativity, including studying how others do their work.

Chapter 7 delves into the study of design principles and their importance to UCD. It discusses the Principle of Proximity (Gestalt Principle), Visibility, Hierarchy, Mental Models and Metaphors, Progressive Disclosure, Consistency, Affordance and Constraints, Confirmation, Reaction Time (Hick's law), and Movement Time (Fitt's law).

Chapter 8 delves into gathering feedback for a new application using surveys, informal interviews, formal interviews, contextual inquiry, task analysis, heuristic evaluation, and A/B testing. Story boarding and prototyping as a means of visualizing the new application are also discussed in detail.

Chapter 9 discusses usability studies of existing applications as a means of gaining feedback. It details procedures and tools that may be used.

Every developer should read this book and absorb the practices described here, especially older developers who have been hearing about UCD but are not aware of its practices.

Solid survey of best practices

User-Centered Design by Travis Lowdermilk is a solid overview of the principles and practices of designing a software project with a focus on your users. The book does a good job of laying out the basic tools and processes of user-centered design, like usability studies, surveys, and project plans. It also argues convincingly for the power of its central points: user focus, preparation, and a structured process.

If you're looking for a deep dive into design theory, this is probably not a book you want. Rather than dig into abstract design issues, this book instead acts as a survey of the user-centered design landscape, and points you to resources to go deeper if a particular topic catches your interest. Lowdermilk also does a good job of pointing out examples of the different principles discussed, though for a stretch of the book he appears to be a bit fixated on a small selection of examples, particularly 53 Inc.'s popular iPad app Paper.

I'd recommend this book for developers who want to open their minds to design considerations and improve their ability to make usable products. It particularly seems suited for the engineer who knows technically how to implement features and write good code, but is still figuring out how to write applications that delight users. I'd especially recommend it for team leads or independent developers who are more likely to be able to meet users and be a part of managing requirements. I think all engineers could benefit from the books emphasis on the users point of view, but the real benefits will come to those who are able to make its suggestions part of the structure of their product workflows.

About the Author
Aldous Huxley was born on 26th July 1894 near Godalming, Surrey. He began writing poetry and short stories in his early twenties, but it was his first novel, 'Crome Yellow' (1921), which established his literary reputation. This was swiftly followed by 'Antic Hay' (1923), 'Those Barren Leaves' (1925) and 'Point Counter Point' (1928) - bright, brilliant satires in which Huxley wittily but ruthlessly passed judgement on the shortcomings of contemporary society. For most of the 1920s Huxley lived in Italy and an account of his experiences there can be found in 'Along The Road' (1925). The great novels of ideas, including his most famous work 'Brave New World' (published in 1932 this warned against the dehumanising aspects of scientific and material 'progress') and the pacifist novel 'Eyeless in Gaza' (1936) were accompanied by a series of wise and brilliant essays, collected in volume form under titles such as 'Music at Night' (1931) and 'Ends and Means' (1937). In 1937, at the height of his fame, Huxley left Europe to live in California, working for a time as a screenwriter in Hollywood. As the West braced itself for war, Huxley came increasingly to believe that the key to solving the world's problems lay in changing the individual through mystical enlightenment. The exploration of the inner life through mysticism and hallucinogenic drugs was to dominate his work for the rest of his life. His beliefs found expression in both fiction ('Time Must Have a Stop', 1944 and 'Island', 1962) and non-fiction ('The Perennial Philosophy', 1945, 'Grey Eminence', 1941 and the famous account of his first mescalin experience, 'The Doors of Perception', 1954. Huxley died in California on 22nd November 1963.

Huxley's best book - perhaps surprisingly

Who is actually interested in the obscure Christian mystical practices and depressing court intrigues of 17th century France? I certainly wasn't, until I picked up this book. I've read quite a few of Huxley's books but I really thought this was the best, rather surprisingly, as "Brave New World" and others I found to be incredibly good.

'Grey Eminence' follows the life of the French Father Joseph, a Capuchin monk and mystic until circumstance (and perhaps his own vicarious lust for power) drew him into the power politics of the 30 Years' War in Europe. Working essentially as the lackey for the powerful and heartless Cardinal Richelieu (or perhaps as his puppetmaster, as this book shows), Father Joseph remained a monk to the last, eating one meal a day and basically walking all over Europe (and barefoot!) to accomplish his intrigues and lay seige to various strongholds of heathenism (as Pere Joseph perceived it, at least). If only all history could be written so well, I'd be reading a lot more of it.

However, above and beyond the history (very well done) and biography (also excellent), the themes Huxley brings up throughout the book fascinating and tie in very well with much of his life's work. A central idea is the Christian mystic practice of "active annihilation," that is, destroying one's own will utterly so that one acts merely as an instrument or conduit for God's (or ultimate reality's, as Huxley prefers to look at it) will or intention. This idea is examined magnificently - its ultimate benefits if successful (Huxley considers such an attainment the highest form of spiritual realization, and makes a good case for this assertion) and its horrible, horrible consequences if unsuccessful (with the life of Father Joseph as a case study in this kind of failure). Pere Joseph's mistake was to assume that France, too, was but an instrument of God's will - and therefore anything he could do to increase and maintain French hegemony, and by implication to ruin and destroy its competitors, was God's will. Big mistake, as Huxley so sympathetically points out. Father Joseph's and Richelieu's policies greatly exacerbated the 30 Years' War and led directly (and indirectly) to untold suffering not only of France's enemies, but its own people. Rape, pillage, destruction, cannabalism, and so on...

If I'm not mistaken this book was written during WWII (published, it says, in 1944) and it can also be seen not only as a parallel of that contemporary madness, but as Huxley's Apology for his own reluctance to engage in politics and the war. Huxley, we can assume, is Father Joseph the younger, a well-intentioned mystic seeking to align himself with the true will or purpose of this universe. Humbly admitting that he has not nearly arrived at that point, Huxley defends the idea, in this long parable, that one who believes unflinchingly that right is on their side and acts with this resolve (not to mention deafness to criticism) will only sow hatred and misery in the world --- unless (a big if), they truly have achieved active annihilation.

The prose shines here, the people come alive, and the insights and arguments (as above) are intriguing reading. It's great to see this appears to be still in print. Highly recommended. In fact this book is so good I wanted to steal it from the library of the monastery I borrowed it from and just let them keep my 'lost book deposit' - as I feel though that I haven't quite completely 'actively annihilated' my own will, it's probably best to stick to conventional morality for now and just return it!

Crucial study of problems between politics and religion

This is a brilliant investigation of the dangerous relations
when we mix politics and religion. This book is almost banned in
Latin American countryes. The reason: we still suffer from
this problem.

Marty Cagan is founding partner of the Silicon Valley Product Group, where he helps companies create winning product strategies and develop the skills of their product organization as well as the techniques they use to create successful products.

During the past 20 years, Marty has served as an executive responsible for defining and building products for some of the most successful companies in the world. He was most recently senior vice-president of product management and design for eBay, where he was responsible for defining products and services for the company's global e-commerce trading site. Prior to that, Marty was vice-president of product at AOL and Netscape Communications, and a software engineer at HP Labs.

There are some great pieces of information in here

To set expectations for this review, I am approaching this from the perspective of a designer. A product manager might have a different perspective, so I just want to make sure the right context is in place.

Overall, this is a good read, and another book discussing how an agile methodology can transform your company. There are many excellent examples of the way things can work if you are in an environment where your entire organization is ready to move in this direction. The flattened organizational proposal is interesting, but many large companies are going to have a hard time centralizing the decision making power as described. I am not saying its a bad idea, I am just trying to apply some reality. I am not sure all companies are ready for this.

This book, like many others, make it sound like it might be evolutionary to move in this direction. However, I would classify putting the practices in this book into play to be a revolutionary step, complete with all the strife and angst involved in revolution. The end result is likely beautiful, just be prepared for a rough ride.

I love the Plan of Action model, and the guidelines regarding reducing the requirements overload. These two streamlining methods have been working well.

This book really advocates for high fidelity prototyping. I agree that there is no better way to convey the choreography of a complex solution, but you must proceed with caution:

1. You need the right tools and the right people to have any hope of this succeeding. High fidelity prototypes like the ones referenced can be alarmingly difficult to build (potentially close to the real solution)

2. High fidelity prototypes can set some scary expectations regarding turn around times. We produce them when needed, but we had to step back and explain our design process to make sure everyone understood that the prototype was there to educate and communicate the concept, not speed up development.

This book is full of tools that could really take your product design and development efforts to new level, as long as you can get buy off in your organization.

I like Inspired, I think it summarizes a lot of experience that the author has gathered. It gives you a lot of topics and themes to think about. I’m asking almost everyone who reports to me to read it since I want us to use the same "product" language. There are some things that the book does not do well though.

For starters, although there are some general outlines of processes and tools, there is no in-depth knowledge. This means we are going to need to develop our own processes and fill in the gaps that may exist. Often, it will come down to the product manager preferences and experience.

Second, the book seems to follow the now popular format of turning blog articles into chapters. This explains the general shallowness of the book and why it leaves so many questions unanswered. The quality of the book degraded as chapters where thrown in. The earlier chapters are richer and organized, the later ones undisciplined and messy. Finally, the book repeats back and forth on topics, which is not a coincidence if the raw materials were blog articles.

Elaborating more on this later point. The Silicon Valley Product Group sells services and works as a consultancy company. The articles in their site are just a way to do content marketing. The aim of the book seems to be just that: to touch on many topics in a trivial way and to help the SVPG gain visibility. There are a lot of links to the website all through out the book which reinforces that feeling.

In the end, I like the book…. but it could be so much better.

A good reference book to keep handy

This book is well written with a lot of thought put in. Though the primary audience of the book is Product Managers, I would say it brings out the essence of working in matrix organization where a lot of forces keep tugging at you and you need to carefully balance all the stakeholders and still push through your ideas. In my opinion, if you are in Enterprise IT and doing custom development of inhouse products for your business users, you will benefit too reading this book

I would call out three portions of the book which I liked for their practical advice:

1) First is chapter 6 "RECRUITING PRODUCT MANAGERS" where he lists out the core skills of a product manager. The one thing I may add to that list is that product managers must bring the ability to "sell" their products. I know product managers are not the same as product marketers or sales person but in my opinion you need to have the passion to stand behind your product and explain to the world how it makes everyone's life easier.

2) Next is Chapter 18 "REINVENTING THE PRODUCT SPEC". The advice to discard the traditional 100-page product spec and instead build a high fidelity prototype is spot on. No one in today's world full of distractions can go through a product specs with pages and pages of text. Even if you are within Enterprise IT, you can relate to this advice. How many times have you obtained a 'sign off' on your specs and built something only to be junked by the users during QA.

3) The last piece of practical advice is on Chapter 32 "BEWARE OF SPECIALS". I have seen this happening where companies get trapped by a privileged customer's special requirements where they completely hijack your planned roadmap. And it is a very difficult choice for a small product company between pandering to the big customer's special requirements (which gives the cashflow) and ignoring them and steadfastly continuing with the product vision.

About the Author
Joseph Lewis French (1858-1936) was a prolific writer and anthologist known for his popular themed collections, such as Masterpieces of Mystery (1921, 4 vols.) and Great Pirate Stories (1922). French led an active literary life: early in his career he founded two magazines, The New West (circa 1887) and The Wave (circa 1890). He then went on to work for newspapers across the country and contribute articles and poetry to periodicals. However, despite publishing over twenty-five books between 1918 and his death in 1936, French struggled financially. Desperate for work in 1927, French was urged by the tabloid daily New York Graphic to write an article on his life's story, which the scandal sheet's editors titled "I'm Starving--Yet I'm in Who's Who as the Author of 27 Famous Books."

great pirate stories

extremely enjoyable stories. being quite the pirate enthusiast i fancy myself a good adventure from time to time and no tale peeks my interest and inner child more than sea tales of far off places, sword fights and dangerous romance on the high seas. although some of the writing can be rather dull in a few of the storis the shorter ones move so quickly you feel yourself sucked into the story and sympathising with the frightened robbed queen and cheering with the plundering buccaneers as they collect their riches and depart with a bang. great story-telling and easy to read this collection of shorts are a pleasent pass time between novels or long car rides.

i could not put this kindle book down i was so engrossed in it i had it read in 3 days,it was excellent reading and the story line was top notch,i must congratulate Kindle for the ease it took me to download this book,a must for all pirate story lovers

Well Told Pirate Tales

Wizardry is in abundance here in this no holds barred pirate story collection. Many of the stories begin comfortably enough, easily lulling any reader into a false sense of knowing how it will all develop, and having figured out the ending in advance. Then comes a development that inevitably proves we're reading a masterful tale, and one told by a genius (if an unsung one) at the art. This could be a classic example of what makes for tales that seem to defy the ravages of time ... so, avast me hearties!
