About the Author
Tanveer Islam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Management at Jacksonville State University, where he teaches hazard mitigation, community resilience and GIS courses. He received a PhD in land use planning from Texas Tech University and did postdoctoral research at Texas A&M marine branch in Galveston and at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Environmental Cooperative Science Center. He is also a certified floodplain manager.

Mr. Ryan is a retired US Army officer and currently a Professor at Jacksonville State University’s Department of Emergency Management within the Institute of Emergency Preparedness. The program provide instruction on various aspects of emergency preparedness with a focus on terrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction, medical aspects of emergency management, public health preparedness, biodefense, and biosecurity. His research interests are biothreat pathogen detection, agro-terrorism and the role of military forces in disaster response and humanitarian assistance.

Since 2003, Professor Ryan has also served as Managing Director of Quetzal Consulting, Inc. a private firm specializing in a wide array of consultative services related to biothreat pathogen detection, tropical diseases research, course development, diagnostics development, marketing and product management. Services are provided to the U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, defense contractors (SAIC, GeoCenters and EAI) and biotechnology and diagnostics companies, among others.

Great textbook with incredible depth and breadth

I am a masters student pursuing my Master of Science in Emergency Management. This was the required textbook for Hazard Mitigation. I cannot recommend this text enough. Any student or even practitioner in the field of EM needs this book on their shelves. It delves into natural, technological, and man-made hazards not only in the U.S., but also in countries around the world.

Poor textbook!!!

For academics, this is a terrible textbook. The textbook consists of examples, but the support documents in the content are missing and much of it is based on old theories that are not relevant or based on current local, State, and Federal practices. The textbook lack sufficient content to write a university level course and requires extensive research to augment the lacking content

About the Author

Ding-Geng (Din) Chen, Ph.D., is a professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Chen has vast experience in biostatistical research and clinical trial development and methodology. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 journal publications on biostatistical methodologies and applications. He is also the co-author (with Dr. Peace) of Clinical Trial Methodology and Clinical Trial Data Analysis Using R and a co-editor (with Drs. Sun and Peace) of Interval-Censored Time-to-Event Data: Methods and Applications. He is a member of the American Statistical Association, chair for the STAT section of the American Public Health Association, an associate editor of the Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, and an editorial board member of several other journals.

Karl E. Peace, Ph.D., is the Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar, senior research scientist, and professor of biostatistics in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University. He is also an adjunct professor of biostatistics at the VCU School of Medicine. Dr. Peace is a reviewer or editor of several journals, the founding editor of the Journal of Biopharmaceutical Statistics, and a fellow of the American Statistical Association. He has authored or co-authored over 150 articles and 10 books. He has received numerous awards, including the University System of Georgia Board of Regents’ Alumni Hall of Fame Award, the First President’s Medal for outstanding contributions to Georgia Southern University, and distinguished meritorious service awards from the American Public Health Association and other organizations. In 2012, the American Statistical Association created the Karl E. Peace Award for Outstanding Statistical Contributions for the Betterment of Society.

I highly recommend this book to anyone doing meta-analysis in general, and meta-analysis with R, in particular. The book brings you up to speed quickly and the examples are relevant to actual research. Using R for meta-analysis in this book is like "standing on the shoulders of giants" as one does their work on meta-analysis.

A gritty autobiographical journey to Cape Town by Porsche, with entertaining characters!

Survival of the Quickest is an automotive journey by Posrche from Plymouth to Cape Town, with an abundance of challenges and humour along the way.

The book begins with a sense of impending doom, as the reader realises that Ben is about to be thrown into a an intense journey with a co-driver he is barely talking to. However, the journey throws up many a surprise as each of the characters deal with the intensity of the varied challenges faced in quite wildly different ways. Luckily for Ben and his co-driver, their strained relationship takes a surprising turn. The book strikes a great balance between the characters, colourful descriptions of the countries and their histories, as well as the trials and tribulations of the poor old Porsche. Being a female reader I was worried I'd have no interest in the inevitable breakdown problems with the car, however these were so random and eventful that it gave an interesting juxtaposition between characters, who either calmly came together to fix the problem (usually with the equivalent of gaffer tape), or the guy who wanted to throw everything in and have the poor old Porsche towed into Cape Town.

The author does a fantastic job of creating tension a great rapport with the main characters, to the point where I was nervous as to whether the car's problems would overcome the trip, as failure appeared inevitable. By the end of the book I felt like I'd been along for the ride myself. An excellent read, am crossing my fingers the author writes a sequel!

A well-written and well-paced classic travelogue.

Coombs and his friends take on an almost inconceivable task: driving from England to the southern tip of Africa in a high-mileage Porsche 944. Coombs ups the difficulty by choosing a a well-used, low-dollar 4x4 as his 'support' vehicle, a group of friends who don't get along, and a co-driver with whom he's having severe relationship difficulties.

This is a well-written and well-paced classic travelogue full of interesting observations about the places and events and people he encountered. Overall, Coombs spent more time talking about the areas through which he traveled; the difficulties of road, terrain and bureaucracy; the vagaries of road food in Africa; and the interpersonal relationships among his team than he did about the car and his attempts to keep it running. This is NOT a criticism of what Coombs has written, just an observation about what I was seeking as opposed to what Coombs he delivered.

I purchased this mainly because I'm a big fan of Porsche; I've owned three, none of them new and a couple of them well into their 'vintage' years. I get nervous when I drive to the next state over and here Coombs travels several thousands of miles crossing countries with poor roads, poor support and repair facilities and some of the worst 'governments' in the world. That took a lot of courage and self-confidence; and Coombs has my respect for even imagining such a trip, let alone pulling it off!

But, I was looking for something that focused a little more on the car. Of course, the car - while it didn't perform flawlessly (how could it?), performed well enough that it covered the distance with only a couple of significant problems. A testament to Porsche's engineering and construction prowess, more than to Coombs's self-admitted amateur mechanical abilities. This left Coombs freer to focus his book on things besides keeping the car moving along the road.

I would recommend this book to someone who likes adventurous travelogues more than to someone who likes Porsches.

The book is great, so far. I haven't finished reading it entirely. A nice touch would be some pictures to support the text. The main reason I bought the book was to see what problems the author ran into under extreme conditions. I also own a white Porsche 944 (1987). May I suggest that other readers run a search on the author's name to access pictures taken during the trip. Another feature I like is that the author gives insights on the various countries crossed. I did cheat and read what finally happened to the 944. It was not junked out, in spite of having been trashed druing the trip.

How to have orgasms to die for

“Paranormal Traveler: The Complete Series,” by Abigail Kinkade is a 10-step story about one woman’s goal to fulfill her sexual desires before she dies, no matter the cost.

We learned in book number one, “A Taste of Pleasure,” that Maggie Matthews is dying. And, since she's spent most of her life reading about magical creatures, she wanted the chance to complete the one unfinished item on her bucket list. Her goal was to meet 10 magical creatures to experience the passionate, sexual pleasures with them that she’d been dreaming about.

The first person on her list would be a vampire, who would not only open her world sexually, but also set her on the path to find the rest of the magical beings on her list, to help her accomplish your goal.

In full disclosure, I have to admit that before reviewing this box set, I had already read the first seven stories as they were each released, individually. Each story is so vibrant, fast-paced, and so passionately written that you can’t help but cheer Maggie on as she meets each new character.

However, one of the most difficult things, at least for me, was wishing that she would stay permanently with at least two characters that she met. The first one, lost his past love and sees Maggie as her reincarnation. The attraction and the sex between them is hot and passionate, but Maggie is determined to fulfill her goals. The second one is the Prince of the fairies.

As I continued to read each book, I was very concerned that Maggie was so focused on her goal of meeting 10 magical creatures that she would die having left true love behind, but surprisingly, book 10 left me satisfied that Maggie had found where she truly belong.

If you belong to any of the following three categories, then you should buy this book; if you like reading hot, delicious, sex scenes or really enjoyed reading about hot, delicious, sex scenes or reading a great story filled with hot, delicious, sex scenes, then welcome to the club.

Exactly what I was looking for

I purchased this book to prep for technical interviews and it was just what I was looking for. Each topic is covered thoroughly and should serve well whether you're learning for the first time or just need a refresher (like me). The example code is clean and compact, and there are lots of colorful figures throughout. The book itself is also nice and compact, about the size of a large novel rather than a huge backbreaking textbook.

My only (very small) complaint is that the code doesn't follow the PEP 8 style guide.

About the Author
John J. Macionis (pronounced "ma-SHOW-nis") was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.

His publications are wide-ranging, focusing on community life in the United States, interpersonal intimacy in families, effective teaching, humor, new information technology, and the importance of global education. In addition to authoring this #1 best-seller, Macionis has also written "Society: The Basics," the #1 most popular paperback text in the field, now in its ninth edition. He collaborates on international editions of the texts: "Sociology: Canadian Edition; Society: The Basics, Canadian Edition; "and "Sociology: A Global Introduction." "Sociology" is also available for high school students and in various foreign-language editions. In addition, Macionis and Nijole V. Benokraitis have edited the best-selling anthology "Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology," also available in a Canadian edition. Macionis and Vincent Parrillo have written the leading urban studies text, "Cities and Urban "Life (Prentice Hall).
