About the Author
Paul W. Thurman, a Columbia MBA valedictorian, service award winner, and multiple teaching-award recipient, has extensive management consulting and line management experience helping a variety of start-ups and Fortune 500 companies realize value from innovative and coordinated business, operations, and technology strategies. Paul currently teaches strategic management and data analysis courses at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and at its Mailman School of Public Health. In addition to his full-time faculty appointments, Paul serves as a clinical professor and affiliated researcher at the National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Research at the National Institutes of Health. Paul received his BS in mathematics from Stanford University and his MBA from Columbia University (with highest honors). He lives in Scarsdale, New York.

The Goldilocks of Intro Stats Books

I teach MBA students and they often ask about a good intro to statistics. I have looked at many intro level books in the past, and most were either much too basic or assumed too much background knowledge. Thurman's book is really the Goldilocks text -- not too basic, not too complicated, just right for new MBA students.

Finally a good textbook. Is the price right?

As a student, do you always skip the statistics part when you read a scientific article and only read the end. Well, worry no more. This book really makes you learn.

I have the feeling that this book will be the next best-seller among MBA's after Graham and Dodd's Book on Value Investing.

I still can't believe this book is on the market with this price. It makes me feel I have been robbed when I spent $100 on all other big text books that I barely read a chapter.

Fantastic Stats Professor

I had the priviledge to study statistics with Professor Paul Thurman at Columbia University. I can honestly say he was one of the best professors I encountered at Columbia. He can teach a blind bat how to work on stata, I know because I was the equivilant of a blind bat in statistics. His course helped me learn how to use statistics in a practical manner-- helping me see the importance of stats in every day life. While not everyone has the luxury of having Professor Thurman as their professor, they can now have the next best thing, this book.

Jamaica Kincaid beautifully delineates hatred and fear, because she knows they are often a step away from love and obsession. At the start of Annie John, her 10-year-old heroine is engulfed in family happiness and safety. Though Annie loves her father, she is all eyes for her mother. When she is almost 12, however, the idyll ends and she falls into deep disfavor. This inexplicable loss mars both lives, as each grows adept at public falsity and silent betrayal. The pattern is set, and extended: "And now I started a new series of betrayals of people and things I would have sworn only minutes before to die for." In front of Annie's father and the world, "We were politeness and kindness and love and laughter." Alone they are linked in loathing. Annie tries to imagine herself as someone in a book--an orphan or a girl with a wicked stepmother. The trouble is, she finds, those characters' lives always end happily. Luckily for us, though not perhaps for her alter ego, Kincaid is too truthful a writer to provide such a finale.

A Girl Created In Her Own Image: Jamaica Kincaid

A young girl's relationship with her mother can be an intimate and trying experience.
In Annie John, Jamaica Kincaid relives intimate experiences and explicitly describes
"intense emotional bonds between mother and daughter" (Draper 1164). The novel takes place in the small town of Antigua, where the young girl, Annie John grows, learns and
experiences many different relationships. As Annie John goes through childhood into becoming a young adult, the reader grows and learns along with her. The reader gets a
feeling that Kincaid copied this novel from one of her journals as an adolescent. The feelings portrayed are so in tune with that of a young girl. Kincaid's relationships are so
believable and real because they directly parallel her own life at that age. Annie John first experiences a surreal, unbreakable bond with her mother. Kincaid uses unique dialect to illustrate their beautiful connection. When Annie John's mother begins to encourage her
to become her own person, Annie John feels her mother is pushing her away and begins to resent her for it. As Annie John begins to meet other girls her age she indulges into
new and more exciting relationships. As her new bonds become more prevalent the bond with her mother begins to fade. Annie John begins to question her mother's rules and
craves her own identity. This journey for her identity ultimately destroys their relationship and a hatred begins to fester. Annie John soon realizes that her small town of
Antigua is only holding her back, she decides to leave for England. Kincaid's imagery and storytelling is absolutely enticing. This story will teach a range of readers about the
sacred relationship between mothers and daughters. Kincaid makes the reader question or relive their own experiences. This semi-autobiographical work delivers an emotional
journey concerning the hardships of living in a post-colonial society while trying to establish your own identity separate from that of your mother.

A simple but complex little girl

Annie John, a novel by Jamaica Kincaid, covers a young girl's coming of age, from the age of ten through the age of seventeen. Annie John is a very angry, confused young black girl growing up Antigua. Annie's mother encourages her to take on more responsibility as she grows older, but Annie fights her maturity. She wants to continue her early childhood relationship she has had with her mother. In Annie John, Kincaid takes the simple subject of a young girl's coming of age and turns it into a profound, sensitive novel. She effectively lets her audience have a bird's eye view of the changing relationship between a young girl and her mother and the turmoil related to these changes in roles. When the audience finishes reading Annie John, they are not only familiar with what it was like to grow up in Antigua, but they leave with the knowledge of the complexity of the mother-daughter relationship. Kincaid clearly tells us the advantages and disadvantages of life in Antigua and how most girls hold their mother in such a high esteem. Most novels are written either for men or women or girls or boys but this novel is interchangeable; any person of any age or gender can identify with the characters and their situations in this novel. Traditionally, Jamaica Kincaid writes about her life in Antigua; however, this book, although not autobiographical, is possibly a comparison of her life and the life of the character, Annie. Jamaica Kincaid, in Annie John, is able to effectively combine aspects of culture and history to illustrate the complexity of Annie John's relationship with her mother and how her relationship with her mother affected her relationships with others.

He was the nation’s oldest living survivor of the infamous Bataan Death March and three and a half years in Japanese prison camps during World War II.

As a youth, he was a four letter man and captain of his high school and college teams.
After college, he captained a team that beat the barnstorming Harlem Globetrotters.

In the late 1920’s, he bought two airplanes and began one of the nation’s earliest regional air travel businesses; then got his own pilot’s license after only four hours of training – and flew until he was 95.

In 1937, as a dentist with a ten year old practice, a wife and three children, the 32 year old ROTC lieutenant was called up by the army, as America began to prepare for war.

After Pearl Harbor, Al Brown and some 90,000 sick and starving American and Filipino troops fought valiantly for four months on the Bataan peninsula until they were surrendered to Japanese forces in April of 1942, food, ammunition and weaponry, virtually gone.

After the Death March, four prison camps, a “hell ship” journey to Japan, starvation, torture, a broken back, a broken neck and fifteen major tropical diseases, including blindness, this once strapping, athletic six-footer was down to a starved 95 pounds.

After the Japanese surrender in 1945, and three years stateside in a veteran’s hospital, Al Brown went home for the first time in eleven years.

In 1950, though no longer able to practice dentistry because of his war wounds, he went to Hollywood, California and started a new life…Incidentally, was the godson of Buffalo Bill.

Top notch Sisters of Battle novel

One of the best Sisters of Battle pieces of fiction available on the market. They're actually written as competant militant force instead of the lambs at the slaughter they are usually set as. Characters are decently assembled and avoid the mary-sue sentence of many space marine characters. Quite a good read with a decent mix of intrigue and usual 40k action scenes.

Too Divine By Far...

In his third Black Library novel set in Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K universe, M. Swallow uses female heroines of the Adepta Sororitas: Sister Miriya, an elite Celestian Superior and Sister Verity, a non-militant Hospitalier. The story is a rather standard action plot, with no additional personal journeys or significant character development to get in the way.

The characters are two dimensional, and all but Miriya's motivations, which seem limited to the "faith and fire" of the title, seem inconsistent, particularly in Sister Verity. She alternates between capable and cowering, proficient and pacifist. The supporting cast is stereotypical: the stern but fair Canoness, aggressive Seraphim, and steadfast Sisters, reading like the entries of their Codex for the 40K wargame.

The villains are similarly single-minded and would be familiar to any fan of the older James Bond films. They monologue (to borrow the term from The Incredibles) and say things to the effect of, "Before I leave you here to die, let me explain my fiendish plan..."

The plot is fairly standard action adventure fair, linear with little in the way of additional twists or turns. The combat scenes read a little like a battle report from the tabletop game, which is interesting if you like a top-down viewpoint, but less so if you prefer your action more immediate and personal. There is little foreshadowing and plot devices sometimes literally fall from the sky. Our heroines emerge unscathed from clearly fatal situations, or vital pieces of their kit conveniently happen to be in the hands of the low-level thugs they just killed. If you like your protagonists to overcome climactic confrontations by divine intervention, in somewhat Homeric tradition, along the lines of "Our faith in the Emperor saved us," then you'll enjoy the finale. If you prefer characters that get by on their own strengths and skills, then perhaps you won't.

The plot would be more forgivable if M. Swallow accurately captured the feel the 40K universe. Unfortunately, his descriptions feel a bit to contemporary, such as specifically calling a meltagun a microwave, and the anachronistic language common to the setting is just a bit off, such as calling an auspex a "sense-taker." He also takes a liberty or two for the sake of the story, such as the somewhat unlikely situation that every psyker on the planet ended up a pyrokinetic.

Though I've been quite critical above, the book is not completely without merit, but those problems make suspension of disbelief virtually impossible for a significant length of time. In short: those 40K readers who aren't completists might want to let this "soon to be series" pass them by.

For over 30 years Dr. Hardt has been studying the electrophysiological basis of spiritual states. He has traveled to India to study advanced Yogis, studied Zen meditators and Zen masters, and explored Christian prayer and contemplation. He has developed a technology based on electroencephalographic (EEG) measurement and feedback, combined, in a highly optimized methodology, with computerized measures of subjective states, depth interviews, and extensive coaching in forgiveness and non-attachment.

This technology has demonstrated significant effectiveness in healing and transforming core dimensions of personality, reducing stress and anxiety, reversing key aspects of the brain's aging process, increasing creativity by 50% and boosting IQ by nearly 12 points on average, enhancing peak performance, facilitating conflict resolution, and in expanding spiritual awareness and increasing access to advanced spiritual states.

Dr. James V. Hardt serves as the President and founder of Biocybernaut Institute, Inc. He holds a B.S. in Physics from Carnegie Institute of Technology, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Carnegie-Mellon University and he has done post-doctoral training in Psychophysiology at the University of California at San Francisco.

Gives a mis-guided view of the field

As a practicing Neurofeedback therapist I was intrigued by this book. It gives an interesting slant on a therapy which is currently primarily used for psychological ills such as ADD, Depression, PTSD and so on.

Hardt has some insights in to the spiritual aspects of brain-waves and he is certainly one of the pioneers in the study of how different brain waves are related to different "spiritual" states.

But other reviews which judge the book to be a barely disguised advert for his Biocybernaut Center, are pretty fair.

The book is biased towards a conculsion which suggests we do all need to spend $15,000 for the level one course at his clinic.

In reality, the Alpha and Alpha-Theta waves which are especially important to his work, are being worked with by neuro-feedback therapists like myself, all over the world. And for a tiny fraction of the cost. I charge $100 per hour and that is typical for a qualifed therapist working with a large amount of highly sophisticated neurofeedback equipment.

What is more, it is possible to learn to induce these brain waves oneself using certian techniques. But, neurofeedback is the optimal route and has scientifically proven record with many disorders, not least those needing more alpha - such as anxiety, post traumatic stress, subtypes of ADD and many more.

If you are intrigued by the ideas in this work then I would highly recommend the following as more honest, user-friendly and fact based introductions to the field of brain-wave altering procedures using the EEG as feedback:

1) Google "Neurofeedback and Alpha" - you'll find lots of interesting links

2) A great book about Alpha states and techniques to increase them is Les Fehmi's Open-Focus. Les Fehmi was the true research leader in this field.

3) A good introduction to brian wave work in general and the history of neurofeedback is A Symphony in The Brain by Tim Robbins

4) A classic on spiritual growth, consciousness and EEG brainwaves, are the books by Anna Wise. Anna is a pioneer in the field - amongst the very first in the field in the 60s and 70s to start researching what was really going on in the mind's of meditators.

5) Finally, you might even consider buying a decent neurofeedback machine yourself. They start at around $800 and four day intro courses to the subject are abundant and around a further $1000. For less than a seventh of the cost of Hardt's introduction week, you would have your own system. A life-time's exploration at your fingertips.

In short, I would probably recommend reading the above books rather than this Hardt book, and, above all, doing your research and not assuming that this rather vain work is the only way to reach EEG nirvana.

Have a wonderful journey. Brain-wave entrainment (in all its forms) and consciousness transformation is a very exciting and real field. Enjoy it. Claim it for yourself - but don't be fooled by this book that it costs $15,000 or anywhere near.

Not recommended

This book would be an excellent read for someone that is thinking of taking the Biocybernaut Training. It reads like a long advertisement for the training which costs a mere $15,000 per module! Good history of the training with a few interesting stories of people that took it but mostly razzle dazzle. It did make me wish I had a spare 15K laying around so I could be happier, more peaceful and on the road to Zen enlightenment.

save your money

Bill Harris is a master marketer who lured me into Dr. Hardt's Biocybernaut program with his glowing personal testimonial of its benefits. I learned only later he only "test drove" it for a day or so. Dr. Hardt's center was nothing I expected it to be for $15K, but rather had a "back room" warehouse feel with what appeared to be cobbled together monitoring equipment and training rooms. It reminded me of Dr. Frankenstein's laboratory. The training is grueling, numbing, and obviously brainscrambling and Dr. Hardt's follow up group sessions were, in my opinion of questionable effectiveness. Producing alpha is great in theory,but in and of itself is not the "holy grail" to happiness as suggested in the book and the program. While, I did experience some beneficial awareness and experience of both enhancing and suppressing alpha in the chamber sessions, the program is essentially group therapy with electrodes. A very expensive indulgence in my opinion, without any particular long term benefit.

This book focuses on eight spatial scales (body, home, community, institutions, the street, the city, rual and nation). Each of these spaces represents the intersection of a range of connections, interrelations and movements of different people who have very different ways of participating in, understanding or belonging to them. Each chapter therefore explores how social identities (gender, race, class, sexuality) and relations are constructed in, and through these spaces, and how the meanings and uses of these spaces are contested by their different occupants. Questions of homogeneity and difference, control and disorder, and social and exclusion run throughout the text.

Topics covered include: body modification, homelessness, neighbourhood and cyber communities, the workplace, fear of crime, policing, gentrification, whiteness, leisure activities, citizenship and nationalism. Guides to further reading, and essay questions are provided at the end of each chapter. A glossary defining key words and a guide to how to do a project in social geography are both included at the end of the book.

Gill Valentine is a Professor of Geography at the University of Sheffield.

About the Author
Professor Valentine has held prestigious international visiting fellowships at the Universities of Sydney, Australia and Otago, New Zealand and has visited and given keynote addresses at a range of prestigious international conferences. She was co-founder and co-editor of the international journal Social and Cultural Geography, and co-edited Gender, Place and Culture. She has undertaken international research in Europe, Africa and the USA and is committed to developing the University of Sheffield's international strategy within the Faculty of Social Sciences.

A BRIEF “POPULAR-LEVEL” PRESENTATION DEFENSE OF THE KJV, AND REJECTION OF MODERN TRANSLATIONS

Author Barry Burton wrote in the Introduction to this 1983 book, “The issue of the modern translations is controversial, even in fundamental circles. The issue is NOT one of inspiration, of course. We believe in the inspiration of the Scripture… The issue is one of preservation. Did God Preserve His Word perfect for us today, or was it only perfect ‘in the original autographs’? If God has not preserved His Word perfect, but has allowed some errors, then, since we don’t have the ‘original autographs,’ we must assume that we have been teaching and preaching out of a book that is not completely reliable. If we believe that the Bible is still perfect, then we must still answer the question, ‘WHICH Bible is the one that God has preserved for us?’ Since the modern translations are different from the King James Bible, not just in wording but in doctrine, and since two conflicting books cannot BOTH be perfect, we must make a choice. We believe that the Bible (KJV) is the Word of God, and we also believe that God has preserved it perfect for us today.”

He quotes the Good News Bible’s translation of Isaiah 7:145 as “young woman” rather than “virgin,” and says, “When you deny the virgin birth of Christ… you are saying that Christ was an illegitimate child, since Mary was not married when He was conceived… you are saying that Mary was a fornicator.. you are calling God a LIAR in Matthew 1:22-23… you are saying that Christ was a sinner, because he would have had to have a physical father.” (Pg. 38)

He cites the Living Bible’s paraphrase of 1 Sam 20:30 [using “SOB”], “God’s Word doesn’t use dirty slang! Is that what you want your children to read? Don’t use the flimsy excuse that it is an ‘adult’ Bible. No one should read filthy language!” (Pg. 43) [It should be noted that the “SOB” reference in the LB’s FOOTNOTE, not the translation itself.] Further quoting the Living Bible’s paraphrase of Zech 13:6 [“‘I got into a brawl at the home of a friend!”], and noting that Jesus said in Mk 14:27 that this was a prophecy of him, he comments, “Did Christ get into a drunken brawl? This is blasphemy folks!!!” (Pg. 45)

He asserts, “The Vaticanus and Siniaticus manuscripts are the oldest, but… they are NOT the best manuscripts!!!!! That’s where the modern translators went wrong!!! They foolishly accepted the Vaticanus and Siniaticus simply because they were old. They did not attempt to find out WHY they were so vastly different from the Greek text that real Christians have KNOWN to be the infallible Word of God… Don’t fall for the ‘oldest are the best’ line! The oldest are NOT the best! FOR EXAMPLE: The Vaticanus and Siniaticus both leave out the last 12 verses of Mark, concerning the resurrection of Christ. BUT… there is not one other manuscript, either uncial or cursive that leave out this passage.” (Pg. 62)

After noting that all modern translations are copyrighted, he comments, “Is the King James Bible copyrighted???? NO!!! WHY???? You cannot copyright God’s Word!!! You can only copyright man’s words!!!” (Pg. 79) [Of course, the KJV was published before copyright law existed.]

On the “plus” side, this is a forcefully-argued statement (complete with “cartoon” illustrations by publisher Jack Chick), that will appeal to many “KJV Only” Christians. On the “negative” side, it is hardly a “scholarly” presentation, and readers seeking much more in-depth treatments might consult David Otis Fuller’s Which Bible?, Counterfeit or Genuine?, and True or False?, as well as Peter Ruckman’s The Christian's Handbook of Manuscript Evidence, or Benjamin Wilkinson’s Our Authorized Bible: Vindicated. Or those wanting the “other side” can read James White’s The King James Only Controversy: Can You Trust Modern Translations?.

Changed my life

As a young believer in Christ I saw the promises of God regarding not only the inspiration but also the
PRESERVATION of the written words of God, called scripture in 2 Timothy 3:16. I knew that what God had
inspired, that also He must have kept. Yet, when I looked in the 'modern versions' I found statements like 'the most reliable manuscripts omit
this verse'.
Mark chapter 16:9-20 troubled me. Did Jesus say '..Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature...' or not? In fact what did God say and what didn't He say? Are all the written words of God preserved perfectly within
the pages of any one book?
Barry Burton's book answered these questions clearly for me and the Lord revealed the Authority of His BOOK so that my foundation in the Christian life could be built on the power of God rather than the wisdom of men.

I recommend Let's Weigh The Evidence to every born-again believer who is looking for final authority.

This is agreat book if you want to see the difference between the different versions of the Bibles. I learned a lot and the book is true to what it tells you.
