Good intentions but unimaginative writing
By Adrian D. Nedelcu
Having bought the entire AVA Academia range of Illustration books, I've read several of them already and know what to expect. It's a great series, however, Basics Illustration: Thinking Visually by Mark Wigan could have been easily improved with minor tweaking. Much of the information contained within is just echoed from "The Fundamentals of Illustration."

I understand that this is an 'introductory' level book, so I wasn't expecting anything life changing in it. The book has several areas where it lists further research for styles and contemporary trends in the industry. This is great; this is exactly what the book needed to deliver. The book also suggest projects for individual improvement as well as guidelines by which to judge and challenge oneself.

So why did I give it only four stars? (Really merits 3 1/2, but Amazon doesn't expressly give you that option.)

The writing seems at times lazy and cringe-inducing. Mr. Wigan is a good illustrator but is also a 'lister', and much of the text is one gigantic, unreadable, stale block of solid text with only commas for comfort. To ILLUSTRATE as it were, imagine if you were reading a 160 page book where most of the text was run-on, repetitive, redundant, listless, uninspired, overly didactic, systematic, expected, uninterrupted, rambling, dry, foreseen, bland, stale, robotic, programmed, trance-like, stagnant, blurry, unnecessary, echoing, monotonous, drivelling, homogenous, and mediocre.

To be fair, reading the last part of my review is a little too critical. It might have been the only way to condense the text, but the problem could have been more innovatively solved. This is one of the few series of books on the subject that is well developed and fairly continuous in its level of quality and visual polish. It's just the listing that marrs the title, severely, at times.

Thinking visually, but not typographically
By Jan Tabery
This book is OK for inspiration thanks to its illustrations, but not very good for reading. The type setting is so poor, that your eyes get tired after reading one page. The author was thinking visually, but somehow forgot, that most books are meant to be read. This one will end up just to flip through. So, if you are thinking about buying it, look around, there are better books. Masters of Poster Design by John Foster is well worth the money for example.

Excellent first few steps into an unknown
By Terri Rowley
This whole AVA book series, along with Teaching Illustration: Course Offerings and Class Projects from the Leading Graduate and Undergraduate Programs by Marshall Arisman and The Education of an Illustrator by Marshall Arisman, make for the perfect independently learning course outside of and Education Institution for a fraction of the cost to get started. One might be able to supplement the norms of education, providing one joins some of the societies and groups, as well as attend some of the conferences and museums activities. Works their backside off developing a reputation, portfolio, and countless contacts through networking. But this seems like it would need to be done in an over flooded educational system and job market anyway. Aside from that this would be beneficial to the life long animation student or artist in the sense that it will provide an awakening or rejuvenated refreshment on different ways to approach and create it. Each book provides an excellent example of project ideas to start, choose, or revise. They also have professional working examples, industry insights, and reference pictures or inspiration to boost things along. This helps rather than just dry reading.

Just the facts.
By J. Halvorson
For a quick biblical reference book, this one is hard to beat. Simply stated, this book breaks topics of religious significance and links them to biblical references, as well as LDS references. There is very little 'opinion' given in this book; just facts, condensed and blunt.

If you are not LDS, simply discount the references to the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price and use scriptures from both the Old and New Testaments. I think you'll be amazed how much you may have in common with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Be warned, this book does not pull punches. When a church takes a stance counter to the Bible; this book calls them on it, with a listing of scriptures to drive the point home. If you feel the need to debate a concept of Christian doctrine, this point is either your best resource, or your worst enemy. No opinion is needed, the Bible has the argument written down, for all to see. This book simply indexes the verses with the various concepts.

Battle: The House War: Book Five, by Michelle West

The weeks since Jewel Markess ATerafin has been acclaimed ruler of her House have not been peaceful; four assassination attempts have been made on her life, and one of the most important members of her House Council has been forced to retire, leaving a seat empty at a time when she requires trusted allies.

The war in the distant South has ended; the armies, victorious, have returned to Averalaan. During the victory parade of the Kings' armies, the fifth assassination attempt occurs--in full view of the Ten, the Kings, and thousands of spectators. To survive, Jewel takes to the sky on the back of a winged cat; she returns to the Terafin Manse, leaving demonic destruction in her wake, the demon itself in pursuit. In the forest behind her manse, she has the power—barely—to stand against the demon; she does not have the power to destroy it.

In the aftermath of the Terafin's funeral, the Kings have demanded an audience with the newest ruler of House Terafin. A single, careless command given to the elemental earth on the day of the funeral has caused unexplained and disturbing changes to the palace itself. But before Jewel can answer the summons, she falls prey to the strange, sleeping plague that has felled citizens across the city of Averalaan—from the poorest of holdings to the wealthiest of mansions across the Isle.

It is there—in the uneasy land of dreams—that Jewel discovers the reason for the sickness, and there that she begins to understand the forces arrayed against both her House and the Empire; if she can survive the traps set by the Warden of Dreams and by her deadly, former allies, she will wake to a changed world—if she wakes at all.

Review
"This is the reason I fell in love with the books set in the Essalieyan universe." —Dear Author (for Battle)

"Richly and superbly detailed. Her characters live and sing." —Examiner (for Battle)

"Ms. West is able to develop in the reader a true sense of emotional connection to the characters. These are people who've been in my life since the late '90's and, like George R.R. Martin's characters, they feel like family. I'm much closer to Sagara's characters, but that's not surprising since that emotional attachment and the growth and development of the characters is central to the story of struggle.... I loved this book, as I've loved all of her books. If you're new to this kind of writing and have read George R.R. Martin's series and enjoyed it, I highly recommend these books." —Chaotic Compendium (for Skirmish)

"House Name is lush, richly intricate, heartbreaking in its subtle dealings with Jay and her den.... West has a brilliant hand in detail, in weaving in background to fuel the story without being clunky and boring, and in creating a luxuriously textured world that is at once familiar and strange. Some say Michelle West has been propelled into the ranks of George R. R. Martin and Robin Hobb—I say that she's been there all along and it's about time she was noticed as such." —Night Owl Reviews (for House Name)

"[City of Night] is a super action oriented investigative fantasy in an incredible world as Michelle West makes her empire and capital seem as if it comes from ancient history books rather than her imagination." —Alternative Worlds (for City of Night)

"This is a compelling story with riveting and finely wrought characters that will keep you up well into the night. This story will go down as one of the best novels in its genre, propelling West into the ranks of Robin Hobb and George R.R. Martin. It's simply a great read; don't miss it." —The Maine Edge (for The Hidden City)

More! I want more!!
By scifi chick
Battle, while mis-named, is a welcome addition to the House Name series. We see Jewel's first days as Terafin, as her power develops and she grows into her new role. Her den likewise mature, and Angel steps into the forefront as the book draws to a close. We learn a little more about the enigmatic Meralonne, as Jewel is propelled toward the Oracle's path. The book does an excellent job of setting the scene for the final book of the series, without giving the feeling of marking time. There is no epic conflict or battle, just a very well-crafted progression of events. I loved the book; Michelle West's vivid descriptions brought some of my favorite characters and events to life, and I had much enjoyment watching the obstreperous cats hiss and grumble their way through events. I ran into the same problem I always have with Michelle West's books; I devoured the book and was left wanting more. No matter how long her books are, they always end too soon!! I was delighted to find that the Sun Sword series and Hunter duology are now on Kindle - time to re-read them and impatiently await `War'.

Tense, tight, and compulsively readable
By ML
If Battle: The House War: Book Five isn't the best book Michelle West has written, it's near the top of the list. Tense, tight, and compulsively readable, "Battle" sets the stage for the rapidly-approaching war between the (mostly good) Essalieyan Empire and the (mostly pretty damn evil) forces of Allasakar, Lord of the Hells.

The two preceding books, "House Name" and "Skirmish," devoted a good deal of attention to political struggles for control of Terrafin, the great merchant House. At the beginning of "Battle," Jewel Markess and her allies are firmly in charge, but hostile political maneuvers and assassination attempts -- some of them apparently sponsored by evil demons -- continue.

To further complicate Jewel's situation, the Twin Kings and those who serve them were so unnerved by the power she demonstrated at the climax of "Skirmish" that they are thinking about killing her themselves. (Jewel fended off a demonic attack on the kings from a long distance off, and reshaped their palace at the same time. No one else, immortal or human, is known to possess power of this magnitude.) The heads of the other major Houses make Jewel's position even more precarious by debating whether to support her or throw her to the wolves.

Worse, allies like the wizard Meralonne APhanniel, the dressmaker/reformed spy Haval, and the trader Jarvin are making demands on Jewel and showing their teeth. Even the talking winged cats are showing that they can only be trusted so far ... and Jewel has scars to prove it.

Underlying all of this is Jewel's recently-revealed power to remake landscapes and architecture throughout the city of Averalaan. Her influence over the elements makes her as powerful as the ancient mortals that built and ruled the Cities of Man (first seen in Sea of Sorrows (The Sun Sword, Book 4)). Her influence, however, must turn into control if she is to do what must be done to save the world from the forthcoming hellish onslaught. In addition, there is Allasakar's knowledge that only with Jewel can the good guys defeat him. She has therefore become a focus for demonic attacks, and while those attacks have not harmed her, others have become aware that being around her is rather dangerous.

Despite the title, there is less physical violence in "Battle" than in the earlier "House Wars" books. There is a great deal of conflict, but most of it is expressed in contentious talk and debate.

Much of the talk is, alas, repeated multiple times in this book and in several of the previous books -- talk about the mutual responsibilities between leaders and followers, about how a leader must present herself, about the dangers of various magical things, about the dance of political negotiation, about trust, etc. The repetition bothered me less in this book than in previous books, possibly because so much of it is well and wittily done.

I could complain about other faults in "Battle," like the implausibility of Jewel remaining so immature after so long on the House council and still managing to win the title of Terrafin, or like West's proclivity to launch into ridiculously convoluted language (look out for sentences beginning with "nor" or "neither"), especially in fight scenes, and then quickly transition into simple language filled with contemporary images and cliches (like her paraphrase of Gen. Helmuth von Moltke, "It is said no plan of battle survives first contact with the enemy"). But I won't complain ... any more than I have already.

This may be a "bridge" novel, as others have suggested, but it has enough action, enough intrigue, enough new revelations to stand on its own, as much as any novel of this sort can. West has done an exemplary job of setting up a complex and nuanced web of relationships, alliances, and antagonisms, not to mention expectations for the future. There's every reason to expect an exciting and bittersweet conclusion to the series.

Software Engineering, The Development Process (Volume 1), by Richard H. Thayer, Mark J. Christensen

Volume 1 of Software Engineering, Third Edition includes reprinted and newly authored papers that describe the technical processes of software development and the associated business and societal context. Together with Volume 2, which describes the key processes that support development, the two volumes address the key issues and tasks facing the software engineer today. The two volumes provide a self-teaching guide and tutorial for software engineers who desire to qualify themselves as Certified Software Development Professionals (CSDP) as described at the IEEE Computer Society Web site (www.computer.org/certification), while also gaining a fuller understanding of standards-based software development.

Both volumes consist of original papers written expressly for the two volumes, as well as authoritative papers from the IEEE archival journals, along with papers from other highly regarded sources. The papers and introductions of each chapter provide an orientation to the key concepts and activities described in the new 2004 version as well as the older 2001 version of the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK), with many of the key papers having been written by the authors of the corresponding chapters of the SWEBOK.

Software Engineering is further anchored in the concepts of IEEE/EIA 12207.0-1997 Standard for Information Technology--Software Life Cycle Processes, which provides a framework for all primary and supporting processes, activities, and tasks associated with software development. As the only self-help guide and tutorial based on IEEE/EIA 12207.0--1997, this is an essential reference for software engineers, programmers, and project managers. This volume can also form part of an upper-division undergraduate or graduate-level engineering course.

Each chapter in this volume consists of an introduction to the chapter's subject area and an orientation to the relevant areas of the SWEBOK, followed by the supporting articles and, where applicable, the specific IEEE software engineering standard. By emphasizing the IEEE software engineering standards, the SWEBOK, and the contributions of key authors, the two volumes provide a comprehensive orientation to the landscape of software engineering as practiced today.

Contents:
* Key concepts and activities of software and systems engineering
* Societal and legal contexts in which software development takes place
* Key IEEE software engineering standards
* Software requirements and methods for developing them
* Essential concepts and methods of software design

Buy the third edition!!!!
By Thea
The third and fourth edition are almost exactly the same!!! The pages and chapters even match up that's how similar they are! The 3rd edition is selling for about $40 used or $70 new for the hardcover so do not waste your money on this edition!

No teacher is going to require you buy the 4th edition, you will absolutely be covered with the 3rd. Also, don't buy the lab manual on here because school's tend to create their own hybrid manual specific to that University that you will have to order from their book store.

Hope my review helped some other students out!!!

Beloved Textbook
By India Ink
This was the text for my undergrad microbiology class. Just finished my Micro class in med school...and once again it was my lifesaver (kind of annoying being forced to spent $1300 on the madated ebook package that I don't use...but I digress).

Firstly, this book is great because it's highly readable. It's not a dry text. Bauman clearly loves his topic and it shows. For example, in the opening section, he discusses Leeuwenhoek...the first guy to ever "see" microbes. He was tailor in the Netherlands who made his own microscopes to inspect wool...and eventually began looking at all sorts of things close up...including protozoa. And suddenly, we realized we weren't alone...that there was a world within our world (seriously...google "leeuwenhoek" and read his wiki page...that a guy worth knowing about).

In the rabies section there's a story about a mother who took her son to Louis Pasteur right after he'd been bitten by a rabid dog (Pasteur was at work on a rabies vaccine at the time)...the boy became one of a handful of people to ever survive rabies (he wound up working in Pasteur's labs as an adult...I googled that because it interested me)...and for kicks I also, looked up a translations of Pasteur's paper on his vaccine. It's kinda sad because it involved injecting tons of rabbits with rabies...but given how devastating rabies is...to humans and animals alike...it was certainly worthwhile work.

Anyway I don't know why...but "fleshing out" the story of diseases or the history of microbiology really gives the facts a much more lasting context. It makes it all more important...and sort of helps me remember that there's a reason why I pore over these textbooks...that we're (as students of science) a continuation of the work and effort that's come before.

I feel like a lot of that gets lost in our modern education system and it's a shame (especially with internet...when it seems like the reverse should be true...it's never been easier to get the bigger picture of the story)

I don't mean to suggest that the book is long-winded...its not...it gets to the point...with a few memorable sentences strewn in when there's some interesting back story to a bug. And those little facts also helped me when I was making memory aids to keep all the microbes/viruses/fungi/helminths/(and their respective drugs) straight.

TL;DR: Buy this book. You'll actually want to read it.

great text
By Jennifer Presley
This text is very helpful with its readable language and diagrams. It provides a sufficient review of basic biology and is written so that one could technically skip chapters and still understand the topics. The text's website and CD provide excellent review tests, flashcards, and animations.

However in some sections and chapters, the author has not organized the flow very well, especially the immunity chapters, and the text goes a little too deep for a 1-term college microbiology class. Its strengths outweigh the negatives enough to give it 5 stars.

I LIke This Poem is a classic collection of children's poems from Puffin Books. Highwaymen and naughty children, sharks and baboons, the Snitterjipe and the Jabberwocky, all have their part to play. Each and every poem in this treasure chest of family favourites was chosen by a child for other children. With poems from William Wordsworth and Christina Rosetti to Roald Dahl and Michael Rosen, there really is something for everyone. Classics to savour and new favourites to discover! This is a classic anthology to treasure forever. Kaye Webb became Editor of Puffin Books in 1961. During the 1960s and 1970s her instinct and flair resulted in the addition of many outstanding titles to the Puffin list, and in 1967 she launched the highly successful Puffin Club, now the Puffin Book Club. She was widely known for her remarkable contribution to children's books, and was awarded the MBE in 1974. She retired from Puffin 1979, but continued her involvement with children's books. Kaye Webb died in January 1996.

I like this book--a lot.
By I. Seyb
I've had this book
that's covered in dirt
for years
and years
and years.
(apologies to Michael Rosen)
I loved this book into the ground, the binding fell apart years ago, so I had to buy a new copy, and now the old one sits quietly in a special drawer at home. (I'm a college student.)
It has classics such as Rosen's "I've had this shirt..." and Masefield's Sea Fever.
There's everything from Anthem for Doomed Youth (Wilfred Owen), to "Be kind and tender to the frog, and do not call him names..."
Poems for kids, poems for everybody.
Best loved.

It seems nowadays that the idealism of the 1979 UN proclamation, along with UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, have been consigned to history, something quaint for collectors of stamps and other memorabilia. As the editor of "I Like This Poem," Kaye Webb, points out, there is always a poem to console us, to give us hope.

"I Like This Poem" was truly a labor labor of love, if you would excuse the cliche. Although Ms. Webb's name appears on the cover, it was her idea and will to have children in age groups, from Age 6 through 15, to select their own favorite poems. She did all the hard, less glamourous work of compiling the children's favorites and doing all the tedious paperwork in securing the rights to publish them. She went a step further, giving each child his or her say in why a particular poem is a favorite, a major part of the charm of the book.

Divided into sections by age group, children from a wide geographic area have selected poems, some funny and some serious but all that speak from the heart. What is interesting is that a good number of poems have been chosed from "adult" poets, such as William Shakespeare, James Joyce, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Walt Whitman, and Langston Hughes, just to name a few. Of course, there entries by Lewis Carrol, Roald Dahl, Eve Merriam, Robert Louis Stevenson, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Ogden Nash - again, the sheer variety makes this book an intersting read for young and old(er) alike. All this goes to prove that children can never be too young for classic "adult" poetry and adults and never be too young for "children's" poetry. The best poems, as I have said, speak from the hear, to all of us and appeal to all our humanity.

As this book was first published in 1979, you will not find the current classic humorous "children's" poetry from the likes of Shel Silverstein, Jeff Moss, Bruce Lansky, Jack Prelutsky, and Douglas Florian. That's OK - there are many fine collections by these poems on the market today. That said, a few notable writers are absent, especially those from non-English-speaking countries. For example, I would have loved to have seen at least one poem by Federico Garcia Lorca. Also missing are Emily Dickinson and Christina Rosetti, both of whom produced numerous fine pieces that would appeal to children. But the collection presented here offers a great deal to be savored.

Now, why did I mention the 1979 UN International Year of the Child? According to various sources, this anthology was compiled in honor of the world's recognition of the dignity of the child. This book does an admirable job toward that goal; it is, therefore, a mystery as to why the publisher does not mention this important fact anywhere in the front matter. The UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child, upon which the IYC is based, was inspired by Janusz Korczak, a Polish educator and pediatrician who cared for orphaned children and ultimately died with them at the Nazi death camp of Treblinka in 1942. Dr. Korczak wrote many books on the dignity of children, including "How to Love a Child" and "The Child's Right to Respect." By allowing the children to select their favorite poems, Kaye Webb book honors both these ideals. This is indeed an anthology to treasure.

My daughter was given this as a birthday present she is now in her 40s. The book was so well loved it eventually fell to bits. I was delighted to find it was still in print. Now she is reading it to her two sons.
